Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called for stronger partnerships within the banking sector to bolster financial inclusion, support entrepreneurship, and drive sustainable economic growth in Jammu & Kashmir. He made these remarks while addressing the Axis Bank Senior Management Confluence in Srinagar.

The event was attended by Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, MLA Gulmarg Pirzada Farooq Ahmed Shah, MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq, MLA Hazratbal Salman Ali Sagar, Director Tourism Qamar Sajad, and senior executives from Axis Bank, including Managing Director & CEO Amitabh Chaudhry, Executive Director Munish Sharda, and President & Head Branch Banking (North) Reynold D’souza. As per information available with TahirRihat.com, the Chief Minister lauded Axis Bank for organizing the confluence and for its ongoing commitment to Jammu & Kashmir.

The Chief Minister acknowledged Axis Bank’s contribution to financial inclusion through its network of 54 branches across the region. Reflecting on the economic landscape, he noted that while Jammu & Kashmir may be smaller in geographical size, market scale, and natural resources compared to other states, it possesses significant opportunities for growth and investment. He emphasized the potential within sectors such as MSMEs, tourism, agriculture, and horticulture.

Highlighting the region’s progress, the Chief Minister pointed to infrastructure development, tourism expansion, agricultural advancements, and a growing entrepreneurial ecosystem as key drivers. He reiterated the banking sector’s crucial role in facilitating credit access, promoting digital finance, and supporting enterprise growth. He also focused on the tourism sector, describing it as vital to the aspirations of both the government and private stakeholders.

The Chief Minister suggested enhancements to the customer experience at key destinations such as the Gulmarg Gondola, including improvements in queue management, the introduction of time-slot based ticketing, and addressing operational gaps. He identified these areas as potential opportunities for collaboration between the government and financial institutions such as Axis Bank, particularly in deploying technology-driven solutions. He stressed that agriculture and horticulture remain the largest contributors to Jammu & Kashmir’s GSDP, and called for innovative partnerships with the banking sector. These collaborations would aim to deliver tailored financial solutions, strengthen value chains, and improve market access for farmers and horticulturalists.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister highlighted opportunities in urban governance, specifically in municipal services such as collections and disbursements. He suggested that banking institutions could play a greater role through efficient and technology-driven systems. He recognized that banks operating in Jammu & Kashmir are familiar with the region’s unique challenges and encouraged them to innovate within this context. He urged the banking sector to expand its involvement in startup financing, MSMEs, and youth entrepreneurship, and to increase its presence in underserved regions while supporting key sectors such as handicrafts and tourism through CSR initiatives.
