Schools in the Jammu region are set to close for summer vacation earlier than scheduled due to a severe heatwave affecting the area. The decision, aimed at protecting students from the extreme temperatures, will stagger the start of the break depending on the grade level. The announcement comes as the region experiences soaring temperatures, placing stress on residents, especially young children attending schools.

The Education Minister, Sakina Itoo, communicated the revised schedule through a post on the social media platform X. Primary classes will commence their vacation on June 1, 2026, whereas students in Classes 6 through 12 will begin their break on June 8, 2026. The move reflects concerns about the impact of the intense heat on the well-being of students and staff.

As per information available with TahirRihat.com, the Directorate of School Education Jammu (DSEJ) has formalized the dates through an official order. The order specifies that primary school vacations will span from June 1 to July 22. For students in Classes 6 to 12, the summer break will run from June 8 to July 22 across all government and recognized private schools within the Jammu division’s summer zone. This coordinated approach ensures uniformity in the academic calendar adjustments.

The Jammu region has been grappling with a prolonged heatwave, with temperatures reaching alarming levels. Samba district has recorded temperatures around 45 degrees Celsius, while Jammu city has experienced close to 43 degrees Celsius. These conditions have led to difficulties for residents, particularly school children who are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. The early vacations are a proactive measure to mitigate potential health risks.

The DSEJ order outlines specific responsibilities for teaching staff during the vacation period. Teachers are required to return to their respective schools on July 21 to prepare for the reopening. Preparations include conducting cleanliness drives, developing teaching-learning materials, planning lessons and timetables, and ensuring the readiness of online classes and ICT labs. This directive ensures that schools are fully prepared to resume academic activities efficiently after the break.

Furthermore, teachers are instructed to be accessible online to provide guidance to students throughout the vacation, ensuring continuous learning. Summer tutorials and remedial classes will be organized in designated Higher Secondary and High Schools, offering additional academic support to students who need it. These initiatives are designed to enhance learning outcomes and provide targeted assistance during the break.

To support continuous learning, scholastic assignments will be provided to government school students following a prescribed pattern. The education department has warned that any failure by school heads or teaching staff to adhere to these directives will result in disciplinary action. This measure underscores the importance of implementing the prescribed guidelines and maintaining accountability within the education system.

The Education Minister also conveyed her best wishes to the students for a safe and enjoyable vacation. She advised them to take necessary precautions during the summer break, emphasizing the importance of staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun. With the early summer break now in effect, schools and families are adapting to the changes, prioritizing the health and safety of students amidst the challenging heatwave conditions across the Jammu region.
