Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s recent five-nation tour was marked by a series of carefully selected gifts presented to various heads of state, each intended to showcase India‘s rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions. These gifts ranged from textiles and paintings to agricultural products and handcrafted objects, reflecting the diversity and craftsmanship of different regions of India.

Among the notable presents was a Muga silk stole for Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The Muga silk, often referred to as the “golden silk” of Assam, is renowned for its natural golden hue and subtle elegance. According to officials, the choice of this gift was meant to resonate with Italy’s own esteemed tradition of luxury textiles and timeless design. Information reaching TahirRihat.com suggests that, in addition to the Muga silk stole, Meloni also received a Shirui Lily silk stole inspired by the Shirui Kashong peak in Manipur. This stole features the rare Shirui Lily, a flower symbolizing purity, identity, and cultural pride for the Tangkhul Naga community of Manipur. The lily’s symbolism also aligns with Italian artistic traditions, where it often represents purity and grace.

Furthermore, President of Italy Sergio Mattarella was presented with a marble inlay work box containing CDs of Hindustani classical vocalist Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and Carnatic singer M.S. Subbulakshmi. This marble inlay box, an example of the intricate art of Pacchikari or Pietra Dura, reflects a decorative tradition believed to have originated in Florence, Italy, before flourishing in India under royal patronage. The gift seeks to bridge the artistic connections between the two nations, celebrating their shared appreciation for art and cultural excellence.

The Prime Minister’s gifts extended beyond Italy, encompassing various other nations and their leaders. Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten received a Madhubani painting with a fish motif. Madhubani painting, a GI-tagged folk art tradition from the Mithila region, is characterized by its intricate geometric patterns and vibrant colors. King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands was gifted blue pottery from Jaipur, a GI-tagged art form known for its cobalt blue, white, and yellow designs, symbolizing Indian craftsmanship. Queen Máxima of the Netherlands received Meenakari and Kundan earrings, embodying the traditions of Indian jewelry craftsmanship from Rajasthan’s royal ateliers.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson was presented with a Ladakhi pure wool stole, along with Loktak tea, an artisanal tea from the hills surrounding the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India. He also received a handcrafted Santiniketan messenger bag, showcasing the region’s artisanal skills (officials said).

Prime Minister Modi also gifted Kesar mangoes and Meghalaya pineapples to UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Additionally, the UAE president received a Rogan painting with the tree of life motif, a rare textile art form from the Kutch region of Gujarat (officials said).

Iceland’s Prime Minister, Kristrún Frostadóttir, received a replica of the ice axe used by Sherpa Tenzing Norgay during the first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953, as a tribute to his historic achievement. Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, was given a Bidri silver work vase, showcasing the refined artistry of the Deccan region, celebrated for its silver inlay and craftsmanship (officials said).

Norway’s Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, received a pressed orchid painting and orchid paperweights, celebrating the biodiversity of the Eastern Himalayas. King Harald V of Norway was gifted an intricate sailboat model, a masterpiece of Tarakasi, the ancient silver filigree art from Cuttack, Odisha (officials stated). Queen Sonja of Norway was presented with a palm leaf Pattachitra, known as Tala Pattachitra, an ancient art form from Odisha.
