Jammu Airport is experiencing a substantial transformation, marked by significant upgrades in its infrastructure and a considerable expansion of its passenger handling capabilities over the past decade. These developments, aimed at modernizing the strategically vital aviation hub in North India, encompass enhancements to runway facilities, cargo operations, security systems, and overall air connectivity. The airport’s director, Devender Yadav, has provided insights into the ongoing progress, highlighting the substantial growth achieved and the ambitious targets set for the near future.

This new facility is slated for commissioning by the end of the current year and is projected to nearly double the airport’s passenger handling capacity, enabling it to accommodate an estimated five million passengers annually. This represents a dramatic increase from its previous capacity, underscoring the growing importance of Jammu as a travel destination and transit point.
The airport, jointly managed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Indian Air Force (IAF), is preparing to observe ‘Yatri Suvidha Diwas’ on June 15. This event is planned to feature a series of initiatives focused on improving the passenger experience, including community outreach programs and welfare activities designed to acknowledge the contributions of various stakeholders within the aviation sector. This proactive approach to passenger engagement reflects the airport’s commitment to service excellence.
Devender Yadav, speaking to reporters, detailed the impressive strides made in passenger handling capacity. He stated that the airport’s ability to manage passengers has risen from one million per annum in 2014 to the current figure of 2.6 million. This growth is a testament to the phased modernization efforts undertaken. The physical infrastructure has also seen a proportional increase, with the terminal area expanding from 7,000 square meters to 14,500 square meters. The under-construction new terminal building is expected to further augment this, bringing the total terminal area to approximately 40,000 square meters, providing significantly more space and improved amenities for travelers.
In parallel with terminal expansion, the airport has also enhanced its aircraft parking infrastructure. The number of parking stands has increased from seven to thirteen, capable of accommodating A321-type aircraft. Furthermore, Runway 36 underwent a significant extension of about 1,300 feet in 2021. This extension was crucial for enabling the operations of larger aircraft like the Airbus A321, thereby boosting operational efficiency and capacity. The landing facility itself is undergoing an upgrade from CAT-I to CAT-II, a move intended to improve operational reliability, particularly during periods of low visibility, which can often cause flight disruptions.
Passenger convenience has been a focal point of the modernization. Until 2017, Jammu Airport lacked aerobridges. However, three were installed as part of an earlier terminal expansion and modernization project. The upcoming New Terminal Building promises a further leap in passenger comfort, featuring six aerobridges and a comprehensive suite of upgraded amenities. These enhancements are designed to streamline boarding and deplaning processes, reducing reliance on bus transfers and improving the overall travel experience.
Beyond passenger-facing infrastructure, other critical developments at Jammu Airport include the establishment of a domestic cargo terminal, the construction of a dedicated helicopter parking stand, and the development of a link taxiway. To promote sustainability and reduce operational costs, a 400-kWp rooftop solar power plant has been installed. Airport security has also been significantly bolstered through the implementation of advanced surveillance and perimeter protection systems. Specifically, the installation of an Under Vehicle Surveillance system at the entry gate and an Integrated Perimeter Security System along the airport boundary in 2024 represents a substantial enhancement in the airport’s ability to monitor and protect its premises.
The expansion of air connectivity is another key achievement. Jammu Airport now offers direct flights to numerous major destinations across India. Additionally, helicopter services are available, providing crucial air links to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, a significant pilgrimage site. These expanded services cater to a wider range of travelers, from business and leisure tourists to pilgrims.
Passenger-centric initiatives are actively being implemented to elevate the travel experience. These include the adoption of the DigiYatra platform for seamless check-ins, the provision of free Wi-Fi services, dedicated assistance for specially-abled travelers, and continuous improvements to terminal amenities. These measures collectively aim to make air travel through Jammu more convenient and comfortable.
The airport’s commitment extends to broader community welfare and environmental sustainability. A series of passenger outreach, community welfare, and environmental initiatives are underway, reflecting a holistic approach to airport management that prioritizes service quality, ecological responsibility, and regional development. This focus on sustainability is evident in the installation of the solar power plant, contributing to a greener operational footprint.
In anticipation of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra and potential disruptions at Srinagar Airport due to scheduled maintenance, Jammu Airport has affirmed its readiness to handle any additional passenger influx. Director Yadav stated that the current terminal has a capacity of 2.6 million passengers annually, while last year’s traffic was approximately 1.5 million. This leaves substantial spare capacity to absorb travelers affected by any disruptions at Srinagar Airport, ensuring continuity of air travel for the region.
Regarding the proposed civil airport development in Udhampur district, Yadav explained that it is part of the Government of India’s UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) scheme. This initiative is designed to enhance regional connectivity and make air travel more accessible to the general populace. Once operational, the Udhampur Airport is expected to connect multiple regions through air services, marking a new era for aviation in Jammu and Kashmir and further decentralizing air connectivity within the Union Territory.
