Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday felicitated 32 recipients of the Kashmir Women’s Organisation (KWO) Fellowship during a ceremony held at Lok Bhavan in Srinagar. The event underscored the region’s ongoing transformation and the pivotal role of women in its development.
Addressing the assembled fellows and guests, Lieutenant Governor Sinha characterized the recipients as embodiments of Jammu and Kashmir‘s evolution towards a future built on self-reliance, equitable opportunities, and inherent dignity. Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that the Lieutenant Governor lauded Dr. Fida Firdous and the members of the Kashmir Women’s Organisation for establishing a robust platform that empowers women across the region to pursue their ambitions with confidence while making significant contributions to the progress of Jammu and Kashmir.
“In a short span, the Kashmir Women’s Organisation has emerged as a powerful centre of hope, trust and positive change. This fellowship programme reflects the spirit of collaboration and shared responsibility,” Lieutenant Governor Sinha stated. He further elaborated on the impact of the fellows’ work, noting, “By challenging deeply rooted stereotypes, these fellows have redefined what is possible. They have set new benchmarks for future generations, and their achievements will continue to inspire, guide and empower others.”
The Lieutenant Governor also took the opportunity to pay homage to iconic women from Jammu and Kashmir’s history, including Rani Didda, Kota Rani, Lal Ded, Habba Khatoon, and Mata Rupa Bhawani. He highlighted their profound influence on the cultural and social fabric of the region, recognizing them as exemplars of enduring female strength, or ‘Nari Shakti’. “We have many such remarkable examples before us, and I want the women of Jammu and Kashmir to lead the region’s development,” he urged, articulating a clear vision for the Union Territory.
Lieutenant Governor Sinha outlined his aspiration for a progressive Union Territory spearheaded by empowered women. He emphasized that women’s empowerment is intrinsically linked to the advancement of a ‘Viksit J&K’ (Developed Jammu and Kashmir), asserting that the progress of women directly translates to societal progress. “I envision a Jammu and Kashmir where women lead in academia, industry, social organisations and governance, shaping policy, driving entrepreneurship and enriching our cultural and literary landscape,” he declared, painting a picture of a future where women are at the forefront of all sectors.
Expressing strong confidence in the fellowship program, the Lieutenant Governor stated that it would reinforce the fundamental principle that women are entitled to equal and dignified participation in all facets of society. “We must remain committed to respecting our Nari Shakti while creating an environment that nurtures their abilities and aspirations,” he remarked. He reiterated the broader societal benefits, stating, “When women progress, society progresses; when women lead, the nation reaches greater heights; and when women realise their dreams, the world becomes more just, compassionate and prosperous.”
In addition to celebrating the achievements of the fellows, the Lieutenant Governor addressed a pressing contemporary issue: the escalating challenge of substance abuse among women in the region. He issued a call to action for the fellowship recipients, urging them to undertake a region-specific study to thoroughly investigate the root causes of this growing problem. He suggested that such research would be instrumental in strengthening rehabilitation mechanisms and providing more effective and meaningful support to women grappling with drug addiction. The initiative aims to leverage the insights and dedication of these empowered women to tackle critical social challenges, further integrating their contributions into the fabric of regional development and well-being.
