Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has initiated a significant infrastructure upgrade in the Nubra Valley by laying the foundation stones for two crucial motorable bridges. The Burma–Sumoor Motorable Bridge and the Tongsted Motorable Bridge, both to be constructed over the Siachen River, were part of Saxena’s maiden visit to the Nubra district. This development is poised to dramatically enhance connectivity and accessibility in the strategically important border region.
Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that the Burma–Sumoor Bridge project is designed to drastically reduce travel distances. Currently, the journey between Sumoor and the villages of Burma, Charasa, Kuri, and Murgi spans approximately 70 kilometers. Upon completion, the new bridge will shorten this route to a mere 500 meters. This substantial reduction in travel time is expected to improve access to essential services such as healthcare and education, facilitate easier movement to markets and government offices, and streamline access to the district headquarters in Diskit. The project, sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs 64.10 crore, encompasses 470 meters of bridge construction across three locations, a 2.5-kilometer approach road, and the installation of six reinforced concrete culverts. Officials anticipate that this initiative will directly benefit around 848 residents, while also providing a significant boost to the local agriculture, tourism, and livelihood sectors.
Similarly, the Tongsted Bridge project aims to establish reliable, all-weather connectivity for several remote villages. This undertaking, with a sanctioned cost of Rs 19.29 crore, involves the construction of a 160-meter steel plate girder bridge over the Siachen River. Engineered to withstand the challenging high-altitude environment, the bridge will ensure year-round access to villages including Tongsted, Yarma Gonbo, Dongsa, Nungsted, Henachy, Changlung, and Sasoma. More than 500 residents are expected to benefit from this improved connectivity. The bridge will also play a vital role in the transportation of agricultural produce and essential supplies, and will enhance access to Yarma Gonbo, recognized as an important religious and cultural center in the region.
During the ceremony, Lieutenant Governor Saxena expressed his privilege in visiting the picturesque Nubra Valley for the first time and dedicating these transformative infrastructure projects. He emphasized that these initiatives underscore the Administration’s commitment to bolstering infrastructure and fostering inclusive development, particularly in Ladakh‘s border areas. Saxena highlighted the critical role of the region’s rivers in sustaining agriculture, horticulture, and local livelihoods, but also acknowledged their potential to become barriers during floods and adverse weather conditions. The development of all-weather bridges, he stated, is essential for ensuring safe and uninterrupted connectivity throughout the year, thereby improving the quality of life for individuals residing in remote villages.
The execution of both bridge projects falls under the Union Territory Administration’s Special Development Package (SDP). This package is specifically designed to drive infrastructure development and economic growth in key areas of Ladakh. The successful completion of these bridges is anticipated to bring about a fundamental transformation in the connectivity landscape of the border region, fostering greater economic activity and improving the overall well-being of the local populace. The focus on infrastructure development in remote and border areas is a key priority for the administration, aiming to integrate these regions more effectively with the rest of the Union Territory and the country.
