Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Centre of Excellence at IIT Jammu, aimed at developing technological solutions for the Union Territory’s specific challenges. Concurrently, Project Phoenix was launched to foster entrepreneurship and self-employment among the region’s youth.
The AI Centre of Excellence is a collaborative initiative involving the Government of India, the Jammu and Kashmir Government, and IIT Jammu. Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that the project’s primary goal is to leverage AI to address pressing issues within Jammu and Kashmir, moving beyond its perception as a mere technological tool.
During a press conference, Chief Minister Abdullah elaborated on Project Phoenix, stating, “To promote self-employment and entrepreneurship, IIT Jammu today launched an excellent programme called Project Phoenix. Its objective will be to identify entrepreneurs, support them and provide them with mentorship, market access and training.” He emphasized that AI’s potential should be harnessed to solve region-specific problems, citing examples such as improving education in remote areas, aiding in medical diagnoses where specialist doctors are scarce, assisting in the early detection of orchard diseases, and providing more accurate, location-specific weather forecasts to mitigate the impact of natural disasters.
Abdullah highlighted the recent heavy rainfall in Rajouri and Reasi as an instance where precise, localized weather information is crucial. He noted that while district-level forecasts are available, detailed insights into the exact areas of heaviest rainfall or maximum potential damage are often lacking. “Our effort, along with IIT Jammu and the Centre of Excellence, is to develop AI models that can help address these challenges,” he stated, as reported by the Tribune India.
Addressing the persistent issue of unemployment in Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister reiterated that government jobs alone cannot be the sole solution. “We have repeatedly said that the answer to unemployment does not lie in government jobs alone. We have to create opportunities through self-employment and entrepreneurship,” he asserted. Project Phoenix is designed to work in conjunction with the government’s Mission YUVA scheme to cultivate a more robust entrepreneurial ecosystem within the Union Territory. “I believe the budding entrepreneurs of Jammu and Kashmir will benefit greatly from the collaboration between Mission YUVA and Project Phoenix,” Abdullah added.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister called for sustained efforts to promote the handloom and handicrafts sector, emphasizing that its importance should not be confined to ceremonial occasions. He underscored the sector’s significant role in the rural economy and its unique place in Jammu and Kashmir’s economic and cultural heritage. “When we talk about ‘Make in India’ and strengthening the rural economy, handloom has an important role. It deserves encouragement throughout the year, not just on one particular day,” he remarked, according to the Tribune India.
