This welcome downpour effectively ended an eight-month period characterized by below-normal precipitation across the Union Territory. According to data compiled by an independent weather forecaster, Jammu and Kashmir received an average of 259.7 mm of rainfall in July. This figure significantly exceeded the normal expectation of 192.6 mm for the month, resulting in the notable 35 percent surplus. The highest surplus was observed in Baramulla, which recorded an impressive 165 percent above its normal rainfall. Ganderbal followed with a surplus of 110 percent, and Pulwama recorded 108 percent. Other districts in the valley also contributed to the overall positive trend, with Bandipora reporting a 33 percent surplus, Kupwara at 32 percent, and Budgam at a modest six percent surplus. Shopian, however, remained the sole district in the Valley to experience a deficit, recording a 40 percent rainfall shortfall during July.

The Jammu region also demonstrated a strong rainfall performance, with several districts reporting substantial surpluses, according to the independent forecaster. Ramban district led the Jammu division with the highest surplus, registering 125 percent above its normal rainfall. Udhampur followed closely with a 108 percent surplus, while Samba recorded a 91 percent surplus, and Rajouri reported an 88 percent surplus. Poonch district also benefited from increased rainfall, with a 47 percent surplus. Doda and Reasi districts registered surpluses of 17 percent and 14 percent, respectively. The Jammu district itself experienced near-normal conditions, with a marginal three percent surplus, indicating a balanced distribution of rainfall within the district.

Despite the overall positive trend, a few districts in the Jammu region did experience deficits. Kathua district recorded a 25 percent deficit in rainfall for July, and Kishtwar reported a 16 percent deficit. However, the widespread and substantial rainfall recorded across the majority of districts in both the Kashmir and Jammu divisions was sufficient to elevate the Union Territory’s overall precipitation levels into a surplus category.
