Jammu and Kashmir is poised to host its first-ever International Film Festival (IFFJK), a four-day event scheduled from September 7 to 10, spanning the cities of Srinagar and Jammu. The festival aims to establish itself as a significant international platform for celebrating cinematic achievements, fostering cultural exchange, encouraging creative collaborations, and highlighting emerging filmmaking talent. It also intends to provide a crucial opportunity for forging partnerships with the global film fraternity while simultaneously showcasing the rich cultural and cinematic heritage of Jammu and Kashmir.
R Alice Vaz, the Commissioner Secretary of the Information Department, provided a comprehensive briefing on the festival’s preparations. The event will feature a diverse range of film screenings across multiple categories, including an International Competition, Cinema of the World, Bharat Panorama, J&K Select, Best Debut Film, Documentary/Hybrid, and Short Films. Beyond film screenings, the festival program is designed to be highly interactive, incorporating masterclasses, panel discussions, dialogue sessions, and roundtables. These sessions will bring together a distinguished assembly of filmmakers, actors, critics, scholars, and other prominent personalities from the film industry, facilitating in-depth discussions and knowledge sharing. Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that meticulous planning is underway to ensure the smooth execution of these diverse components.
Key logistical arrangements have been reviewed, focusing on the principal festival venues. In Srinagar, these include the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) and INOX Shivpora, while in Jammu, Waves Cinema has been designated as a primary venue. A unique proposed venue, a floating cinema at Lalit Ghat, is also part of the festival’s innovative approach. Furthermore, plans are in motion for a special excursion to Gulmarg for a select group of filmmakers. This excursion is expected to include visits to prominent attractions such as the Gulmarg Gondola, the golf course, and the club, offering participants an immersive experience of the region’s natural beauty and recreational offerings.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who chaired a high-level meeting to assess the festival’s readiness, underscored the critical importance of close inter-departmental coordination. He emphasized the need for the timely completion of all arrangements to guarantee a seamless and positive experience for all attendees, including filmmakers, artists, delegates, guests, and the general audience. The Chief Minister issued directives to all concerned departments and agencies, urging them to ensure that all preparations are finalized well in advance of the festival’s commencement. This proactive approach is seen as vital for establishing the IFFJK as a premier annual event on the global film calendar.
During the meeting, a strong emphasis was placed on prominently showcasing Jammu and Kashmir’s unique cultural tapestry. This includes highlighting the region’s rich heritage, distinct cuisine, exquisite handicrafts, traditional art forms, and iconic tourist destinations. The Chief Minister stressed that meticulous planning and seamless coordination among all stakeholders are indispensable for achieving this objective and for cementing the IFFJK’s reputation on the international stage. The festival is envisioned not just as a cinematic event but as a comprehensive cultural showcase designed to attract global attention to the region’s multifaceted attractions.
A thorough review of essential logistical and security arrangements was conducted. This encompassed security protocols, traffic management, airport facilitation, hospitality services, accommodation provisions, transportation networks, medical facilities, power supply, sanitation, and overall venue preparedness. The establishment of dedicated liaison and nodal officers is a key measure being implemented to streamline coordination efforts between the Information Department and visiting guests, ensuring that all their needs are met efficiently. The Information Department has been assigned the responsibility of maintaining a consolidated action matrix, meticulously tracking departmental responsibilities, timelines, progress, and any pending issues. This matrix will also guide the coordination of invitations, participant facilitation, and media arrangements, ensuring a unified and effective approach to event management.
Extensive publicity and branding initiatives for the IFFJK are also being planned. These efforts will target regional and national audiences through a multi-channel approach, utilizing print, electronic, digital, and outdoor media platforms. The aim is to generate significant awareness and anticipation for the inaugural festival, positioning it as a must-attend event for film enthusiasts and industry professionals alike. The success of these preparatory measures is expected to lay a strong foundation for the IFFJK to become a recurring and significant fixture in the international film festival circuit, contributing to cultural exchange and promoting Jammu and Kashmir as a vibrant destination for arts and tourism.
