Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday underscored the critical importance of multidisciplinary learning for young people to effectively navigate and address the complex challenges of the 21st century. Speaking at the inauguration of new academic programmes at Cluster University Jammu, Sinha articulated that the future will favor individuals capable of integrating knowledge from diverse fields rather than those confined to narrow specializations.
Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that Sinha stated, “I believe that the 21st century will welcome those young people who are not specialists in just one subject but can integrate knowledge from multiple fields and discover new solutions.” This vision was presented during the launch of the university’s innovative “design your degree” program and other academic initiatives at Lok Bhawan. The Lieutenant Governor further elaborated on the transformative potential of this approach, noting, “The future belongs to those who recognise possibilities, not boundaries. This initiative empowers students to shape their own academic journeys, combining subjects according to their interests, talents and aspirations.”
Sinha highlighted that the ever-expanding frontiers of knowledge and the multidimensional nature of societal problems necessitate a departure from traditional, single-subject-focused education. He emphasized that meaningful solutions can only emerge from multidisciplinary approaches. The inauguration of integrated programmes in physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, mathematics, and geography, as reported by the university, aims to cultivate holistic researchers equipped to tackle intricate issues. As an example, Sinha pointed to the multifaceted nature of climate change, explaining that understanding and addressing it requires contributions from a wide array of disciplines, including chemistry, physics, mathematics, and geography.
“If we provide our students with a broader perspective from the very beginning, they will not become specialists in just one subject but will emerge as researchers and thinkers capable of understanding complex problems in their entirety and finding solutions,” Sinha remarked, as per university officials. This educational philosophy aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of global challenges.
In addition to these forward-looking programmes, the university also launched a one-year postgraduate diploma in Sanatan Dharma and Indian Knowledge Systems, alongside the establishment of a Department of Vedic Studies. Sinha stressed the necessity of balancing scientific advancement with a deep understanding of India’s rich intellectual heritage and civilizational values. “As modern knowledge is essential, it is equally important that we understand who we are, what our intellectual tradition has been and what our civilisation has contributed to the world,” he stated, adding that this programme is designed to enable students to engage with India’s profound civilizational wisdom in parallel with their modern education.
Further aligning with national technological ambitions, the Lieutenant Governor inaugurated a Semiconductor Skilling Programme, a collaborative effort with IIT Madras. This initiative is intended to furnish students with cutting-edge expertise crucial for India’s aspirations in technology development and manufacturing. “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has resolved to become a leader in technology development and manufacturing. This skilling initiative will align students with the needs of future industries and strengthen India’s position in the global deep-tech landscape,” Sinha affirmed. He urged students to prioritize innovation and skill development, asserting that each new skill and innovation would contribute significantly to India’s journey towards self-reliance and global leadership.
The Cluster University Jammu also introduced a postgraduate programme in Environmental Sciences with a minor specialization in Renewable Energy, and a one-year postgraduate diploma in Dogri Translation. The event also saw the release of a Nasha Mukt Bharat activity report. In a symbolic renaming, the Vice-Chancellor’s office-cum-secretariat complex was designated “Suryaputri Tawi Bhawan,” and the old IIM campus was renamed “Chandrabhaga Campus,” reflecting local heritage and identity.
