Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday inaugurated the foundation stone for the Mata Lalleshwari Cultural-cum-Heritage Centre, a significant project aimed at preserving and promoting the legacy of the 14th-century mystic poet and saint, Lalleshwari, also known as Lal Ded. The centre, to be established at Mata Bhaderkali Asthapan in Thalwal, near Jammu, is envisioned as a hub for spiritual tourism, cultural preservation, and economic revitalization for the region. The project has been allocated Rs 4.5 crore from the Capex budget.
Speaking at the ceremony, Lieutenant Governor Sinha emphasized the critical role of cultural heritage and foundational visionaries in maintaining societal balance and direction. He stated, “Just as a tree without roots cannot withstand a storm, a society disconnected from its foundational visionaries, cultural heritage and the philosophy of its sages loses its balance, sensitivity and sense of direction.” Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that the initiative is expected to significantly boost spiritual tourism, thereby contributing to the economic upliftment of the area.
The proposed centre is designed to embody India‘s civilisational consciousness and serve as a focal point for cultural harmony, spiritual exploration, and academic research. Lieutenant Governor Sinha highlighted that Jammu and Kashmir has historically been a land of sages, saints, and truth-seekers, and this centre dedicated to Mata Lalleshwari will be a testament to this rich tradition. He remarked, “The centre, dedicated to Mata Lalleshwari, will embody India’s civilisational consciousness and serve as a beacon of cultural harmony, spiritual tourism and academic research.” The project is seen as a convergence of ancestral wisdom and the contemporary aspirations of a developing and self-reliant Jammu and Kashmir.
Mata Lalleshwari’s teachings, which transcended social divisions and championed ideals of tolerance, equality, and inner transformation, continue to resonate across generations. Her verses, often compared to the profound truths found in the Upanishads, offer enduring inspiration. The Lieutenant Governor elaborated on the centre’s role as a repository of her philosophy, facilitating engagement for scholars, artists, and spiritual seekers. He added, “The centre will act as a living repository of her philosophy, enabling scholars, artists and seekers to engage with her wisdom and disseminate it globally through modern platforms.” The facility will include provisions for exhibitions, translation projects, archival resources, and fellowships focused on Kashmir Shaivism.
Beyond economic development, Sinha underscored the importance of civilisational memory and moral guidance for a nation. He observed that in the contemporary fast-paced world, individuals often grapple with mental stress, identity crises, and existential loneliness, noting that material success alone cannot address these internal voids. According to the Lieutenant Governor, the teachings of saints like Mata Lalleshwari, disseminated through the cultural centre, will offer spiritual resources to foster self-discipline, mental peace, and emotional resilience. The initiative aims to connect contemporary society with timeless wisdom, providing a counterbalance to the challenges of modern life and reinforcing the region’s cultural and spiritual identity.
