Jammu and Kashmir Police have dismantled a significant interstate narcotics smuggling network with the apprehension of four individuals and the seizure of more than 2.6 kilograms of opium in the Kathua district. The operation, initiated on Monday, marks a substantial success in the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region.
Acting on precise intelligence regarding the movement of illicit substances, a dedicated police team stationed at the Lakhanpur police station established a checkpoint on the bypass road. Their vigilance paid off when they intercepted a truck. A thorough search of the vehicle yielded the initial recovery of 1.026 kilograms of opium. The driver of the truck, identified as Gurvinder Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran district in Punjab, and his accomplice, Sukhdev Singh, also hailing from Tarn Taran, were taken into custody at this stage.
Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that during subsequent interrogation, Sukhdev Singh provided crucial details about the origin and distribution chain of the seized contraband. He disclosed that the consignment had originated in Gujarat and was transferred to him in Rajasthan by an unidentified handler. The intended destination for this shipment was Punjab, where a receiver was awaiting its delivery. This disclosure immediately prompted further investigative action by the police.
Following up on Sukhdev Singh’s revelations, a specialized police unit conducted a raid in Nakki village, located in the Pathankot area. This operation led to the identification and apprehension of the intended receiver, Rakesh Kumar. The investigation revealed that the illicit package had not been directly in Rakesh Kumar’s possession but was instead concealed at the residence of his neighbor, Ajay Kumar. A subsequent search of Ajay Kumar’s premises uncovered the remaining portion of the opium, bringing the total quantity seized in the operation to 2.672 kilograms.
Both Rakesh Kumar and Ajay Kumar were subsequently arrested. A case has been formally registered at the Lakhanpur police station under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The investigation is actively continuing with the objective of thoroughly mapping out the entire forward and backward linkages of this interstate drug network. Authorities are keen to identify all individuals involved, from the initial suppliers to the final distributors, to dismantle the operation comprehensively. The successful bust underscores the persistent threat posed by drug trafficking networks that operate across state borders, exploiting various routes and methods to distribute illegal substances.
The operation was conducted under the overarching supervision of Kathua Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohita Sharma. The immediate execution of the operation was spearheaded by the Station House Officer (SHO) of Lakhanpur police station, with the support and guidance of other senior police officers.
