Following the recent deportation of 150 Bangladeshi nationals from Kashmir, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Jammu and Kashmir has called for a significant acceleration in the process of removing all confirmed illegal immigrants. The party emphasized the need for swift action in all verified cases of undocumented foreign nationals residing in the Union Territory.

Girdhari Lal Raina, a spokesperson for the BJP J&K and a former Member of the Legislative Council, commended the reported deportation of approximately 600 Bangladeshi individuals identified as residing illegally within Jammu and Kashmir. He specifically noted the initial batch of 150 persons who were flown from Srinagar to Bagdogra, a transit point for their onward deportation. However, Raina stressed that the current pace of these operations must be substantially increased, advocating for the prompt handling of all cases where illegal immigration has been confirmed through due verification processes.

Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that the Jammu and Kashmir Police and intelligence agencies have been actively engaged in conducting surveys to identify individuals from communities such as Rohingya and Bangladeshi, along with other undocumented foreign nationals present in the Union Territory. According to Raina, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has submitted verified data to a High-Level Committee on Demographic Change (HLCDC) established by the central government. This submitted data reportedly identifies around 8,160 undocumented foreign nationals across the entirety of Jammu and Kashmir. Raina further claimed that security assessments indicate the actual number of such individuals could be considerably higher, particularly in instances where persons may have managed to obtain forged or fraudulent local identification documents, thereby complicating identification and removal efforts.

The BJP leader also urged for a comprehensive investigation into the mechanisms of illegal entry into the region, the procurement of forged documents, and the local networks that allegedly facilitate the unauthorized settlement of these individuals. He highlighted the particular concern regarding such activities in sensitive border districts. Raina demanded stringent action against any agents, middlemen, landlords, or other facilitators found to be involved in the illegal entry of foreigners, human trafficking, providing shelter to undocumented immigrants, or arranging fraudulent documentation for them. Furthermore, he sought a thorough probe into any potential links between these activities and hawala operations, foreign funding, organized crime syndicates, or terror networks, underscoring the national security implications.

These remarks by the BJP come in the immediate aftermath of the Union Territory administration deporting a group of Bangladeshi immigrants who were identified during a specialized verification drive conducted in the Kashmir Valley. This group was transported from Srinagar to West Bengal, from where their final deportation is being managed. The recent deportations are part of a broader initiative by the central government, which in May established a high-level committee tasked with examining demographic changes linked to illegal immigration and proposing remedial measures. This committee, headed by retired Justice Prakash Prabhakar Navlekar, conducted an inspection tour of Jammu and Kashmir in August, visiting various areas including settlements known to be inhabited by Rohingya and Bangladeshi nationals.

The ongoing focus on illegal immigration in Jammu and Kashmir reflects a complex interplay of security concerns, demographic shifts, and governance challenges. The administration’s efforts, supported by political parties like the BJP, aim to address what is perceived as a significant issue impacting local demographics and potentially national security. The verification drives and subsequent deportations are seen as steps towards asserting greater control over the region’s population and ensuring compliance with immigration laws. The involvement of intelligence agencies and the submission of verified data to central committees highlight a coordinated approach to tackling the issue, with a particular emphasis on identifying and neutralizing any associated criminal or extremist linkages. The call for a comprehensive investigation into facilitators and potential networks suggests a strategy to dismantle the support systems that enable illegal settlement, thereby creating a more robust deterrent against future unauthorized entries and stays.

The demographic data collected and submitted by the Jammu and Kashmir administration is crucial for informing policy decisions at the highest levels of government. The HLCDC’s mandate to examine demographic changes underscores the recognition that illegal immigration can have far-reaching consequences, extending beyond immediate law and order concerns to impact social fabric, resource allocation, and electoral dynamics. The BJP’s assertion that the actual number of undocumented foreigners could be higher than officially recorded, due to the use of forged documents, points to the sophisticated nature of the challenges faced in accurately enumerating and managing the foreign national population. This aspect necessitates a multi-pronged approach that includes not only deportation but also stringent measures to prevent the creation and use of fraudulent identity documents.

The demand for action against agents, landlords, and other facilitators is critical, as these individuals often act as intermediaries, enabling illegal immigrants to integrate into local communities and evade detection. Their involvement can range from providing housing and employment to facilitating access to essential services, thereby creating a parallel system that operates outside the purview of the law. By targeting these facilitators, authorities aim to disrupt the ecosystem that supports illegal immigration. The potential links to hawala operations, foreign funding, organized crime, and terror networks add another layer of complexity, suggesting that illegal immigration may be intertwined with more serious criminal activities that pose a threat to national security. A thorough investigation into these connections is therefore essential for a comprehensive understanding and effective mitigation of the risks involved.

The Union Territory administration’s proactive stance, as evidenced by the recent deportation drive, signals a commitment to addressing the issue of illegal immigration with greater urgency. The establishment of the high-level committee by the central government further reinforces the national importance attached to this matter. The committee’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir and its inspection of settlements inhabited by foreign nationals indicate a detailed on-the-ground assessment aimed at gathering firsthand information to inform its recommendations. The BJP’s advocacy for faster deportations and stricter enforcement aligns with the broader governmental objective of securing the borders and ensuring the integrity of the immigration system. The party’s emphasis on investigating facilitators and potential links to criminal networks reflects a concern that illegal immigration could be exploited by anti-national elements.

The situation in Jammu and Kashmir, given its sensitive geopolitical context, makes the issue of illegal immigration a matter of paramount importance for national security. The presence of undocumented foreign nationals, particularly in border areas, raises concerns about potential infiltration and the exploitation of local networks for nefarious purposes. The BJP’s stance reflects a political imperative to address these concerns and demonstrate a firm approach to border management and internal security. The party’s call for swift action and comprehensive investigations underscores its commitment to ensuring that all verified cases of illegal immigration are dealt with decisively, thereby reinforcing the rule of law and safeguarding national interests.
