The University of Jammu (JU) has launched a new initiative aimed at bolstering mental health awareness among its student population. The program, titled ‘Your Mind Matters,’ seeks to encourage students to proactively address their emotional well-being and to utilize available counseling services without apprehension. This series represents a significant step by the university to prioritize the holistic development of its students, acknowledging that academic success is intrinsically linked to emotional resilience.

Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that the Directorate of Internal Quality Assurance (DIQA) at JU is spearheading this crucial awareness campaign. The inaugural session of the ‘Your Mind Matters’ series was held at the Convention Hall of The Business School, University of Jammu. This initial event was specifically organized for students enrolled in The Business School, the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, and the International Centre for Cross-Cultural Research and Human Resource Management (ICccR & HRM). The university’s objective with this initiative is to demystify mental health support and make counseling services more accessible, thereby fostering an environment where students feel empowered to seek help at the earliest signs of distress.

The overarching goal of the ‘Your Mind Matters’ series is to cultivate a safe and supportive campus atmosphere where students can openly discuss their concerns without the burden of fear or hesitation. Dr. Ginny Dogra, who serves as the Director of DIQA and is also the Officiating Director of the Mental Health and Counselling Unit, highlighted the importance of these efforts during the launch event. She stated that the establishment of the dedicated Mental Health and Counselling Unit within the University Health Centre, coupled with the introduction of this awareness series, are vital components in addressing the mental and emotional health needs of the university’s students. Dr. Dogra emphasized that while the university remains committed to academic advancement, it is equally imperative to provide robust support for the emotional challenges and pressures that students invariably encounter throughout their academic journeys.

During the interactive session that formed part of the initiative, Shweta Jain, a qualified counselor, provided valuable insights into various facets of mental health, emotional well-being, and effective stress management techniques. She underscored the critical importance of striking a healthy equilibrium between academic commitments and personal life, a balance that is often challenging for students to maintain. Jain elaborated on how the cumulative effects of academic pressure, personal issues, and the everyday complexities of life can significantly impact a student’s emotional state. She strongly advocated for the recognition and proactive addressing of these difficulties, cautioning against the detrimental practice of ignoring them. The ‘Your Mind Matters’ series is designed to foster open dialogue about mental health, helping students to understand that seeking professional counseling is not a sign of weakness but rather a positive and constructive step towards effectively managing challenges and preserving their overall emotional well-being.

The university’s commitment to student welfare extends beyond academic pursuits, recognizing that a mentally healthy student body is more likely to achieve academic success and thrive in their future careers. The ‘Your Mind Matters’ series is expected to be a recurring program, with future sessions planned to cover a wider range of topics relevant to student mental health. These may include coping mechanisms for exam stress, managing interpersonal relationships, developing resilience, and identifying signs of common mental health conditions. By providing consistent and accessible support, the University of Jammu aims to destigmatize mental health issues and create a campus culture where seeking help is normalized and encouraged. The initiative also aims to equip students with the tools and knowledge necessary to navigate the complexities of modern life, ensuring they have the resources to maintain their mental and emotional equilibrium throughout their university years and beyond. The establishment of a dedicated counseling unit signifies a long-term investment in the student community’s well-being, moving beyond one-off awareness campaigns to provide ongoing support and guidance. This proactive approach is crucial in preventing mental health issues from escalating and ensuring that students can fully benefit from their educational experience.
