The upcoming third edition of the Kashmir Marathon is set to host a significant international contingent, with 67 foreign nationals from 12 different countries having registered to participate. Preparations are actively underway to ensure the seamless execution of the event, scheduled for October 25. An official spokesman confirmed the substantial foreign participation, highlighting the growing global appeal of the marathon.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, recently presided over a meeting focused on reviewing the extensive preparations for the marathon. During this high-level review, Garg took stock of the arrangements being meticulously put in place by the nodal Tourism Department, alongside various other stakeholder departments involved in the event’s organization. Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that the meeting emphasized a coordinated approach to manage the diverse logistical and operational aspects of the marathon.
The Kashmir Marathon will feature two primary race categories: a full marathon, covering the challenging distance of 42.19 kilometers, and a half marathon, spanning 21.09 kilometers. Both races are slated to take place on the same morning, offering participants a choice based on their endurance levels and training. Complementing the races, a three-day Marathon Expo is also being organized at the Polo Ground in Srinagar, providing a hub for participants, organizers, and the public to engage with the event.
To prioritize the safety and well-being of all participants, a robust network of 17 aid stations will be strategically established along the entire marathon route. These stations are designed to offer necessary medical assistance and support to runners throughout their journey. The deployment of these aid stations underscores the commitment to participant welfare, a critical component for any large-scale sporting event.
In a move to ensure effective interdepartmental coordination and timely execution of responsibilities, Divisional Commissioner Garg directed all concerned departments to nominate dedicated nodal officers. This measure is intended to streamline communication and accountability, ensuring that each department’s role is clearly defined and efficiently managed. The emphasis on nominated officers reflects a structured approach to event management, aiming to prevent any logistical bottlenecks.
Furthermore, Garg stressed the importance of enhancing the visual appeal of the marathon route, calling for beautification initiatives. This includes the strategic placement of potted flowers along the course, intended to create a more aesthetically pleasing environment for both runners and spectators. The Roads and Buildings Department has been tasked with conducting a thorough inspection of the entire route. Their mandate includes ensuring that all potholes are meticulously filled, thereby providing a smooth and safe running surface for the athletes. This attention to road infrastructure is paramount for preventing injuries and ensuring a positive running experience.
The concerned authorities have also been instructed to undertake the pruning of trees that line the marathon loop. This measure is likely aimed at ensuring clear passage for runners and potentially mitigating any safety concerns related to overhanging branches. Additionally, Garg highlighted the significance of preserving Srinagar’s renowned scenic beauty, particularly around the iconic Dal Lake. He stressed the imperative of maintaining cleanliness in the vicinity of the lake, ensuring that the marathon does not detract from the natural splendor of the area.
The deployment of volunteers at appropriate locations has also been mandated to assist participants and manage crowd flow. The establishment of medical camps, staffed with adequate medical personnel, is a key directive to effectively handle any health-related emergencies that may arise during the event. This proactive approach to healthcare is crucial for the overall success and safety of the marathon.
The Traffic Police have been specifically asked to publicize designated parking locations well in advance of the marathon day. This initiative aims to facilitate participants by providing clear guidance on where to park their vehicles, thereby minimizing congestion and ensuring smooth regulation of vehicular movement on the day of the event. Effective traffic management is often a critical factor in the success of large public gatherings.
Divisional Commissioner Garg reiterated that close coordination among all stakeholder departments and the timely completion of all preparatory measures are absolutely essential for the successful organization of the third edition of the Kashmir Marathon. His remarks underscored the collaborative effort required to bring such a significant event to fruition, emphasizing that meticulous planning and execution are the cornerstones of its anticipated success.
