In a significant administrative development for the Union Territory of Ladakh, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has announced the creation of Sankoo district. This decision, made on Friday, fulfills a long-standing aspiration of the residents in the region.

The announcement was made via the Lieutenant Governor’s official handle on X, where he stated, “In line with the ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ vision of Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi ji and Hon’ble HM Shri Amit Shah ji, I am pleased to announce the creation of Sankoo District.” He further elaborated that the move was made possible through the constructive engagement of key stakeholders, including the Anjuman-e-Sahib Zaman, under the leadership of its chief patron, Syed Mohammad Razvi, and chairman Sheikh Sadiq Balaghi. Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that contributions from Dr. Jaffar Akhoon, Chief Executive Councillor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil; Haneefa Jan, Member of Parliament from Ladakh; and Tashi Gyalson, former CEC of Leh, were also instrumental in achieving this outcome.

The establishment of Sankoo as a new district comes shortly after the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Ladakh unit declared Sankoo an organisational district. This prior move by the BJP was seen as a step towards securing full-fledged district status for the area, with the party pledging to support the local populace until their demand was met. The Lieutenant Governor extended his congratulations to all individuals and groups who contributed to this achievement.

The demand for district status for Sankoo, along with Shakar Chiktan, was recently highlighted by Jamiat Ul Ulama Isna Asharia, an influential religious and social organization in the Kargil region. In a letter to the Ladakh administration last month, the organization also advocated for the creation of a Kargil division. According to the organization’s president, these demands are rooted in the long-standing aspirations of the public and are justified by several factors, including population density, geographical considerations, administrative accessibility, developmental needs, and the strategic importance of the Kargil region.

Prior to this latest announcement, Ladakh comprised seven districts. The addition of Sankoo will bring the total number of districts in the Union Territory to eight. This expansion is expected to improve administrative outreach and facilitate development initiatives in the newly formed district, addressing the specific needs and challenges of its population. The administrative reorganization reflects a broader trend of decentralization and efforts to bring governance closer to the people in the Union Territory.

The creation of new administrative units often involves a complex process of evaluation, considering factors such as population, revenue generation potential, geographical spread, and the ability to provide essential services. The Lieutenant Governor’s statement emphasizes the alignment of this decision with national development objectives, suggesting a focus on inclusive growth and equitable distribution of resources. The involvement of local representative bodies and community leaders underscores a collaborative approach to governance in Ladakh.

The strategic importance of the Kargil region, as mentioned by the Jamiat Ul Ulama Isna Asharia, likely plays a role in such administrative decisions. Kargil is a key area in Ladakh, bordering sensitive international frontiers, and effective governance and development are crucial for regional stability and progress. The creation of a new district can lead to enhanced focus on infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and employment opportunities, thereby improving the quality of life for residents.

The administrative structure of Ladakh has seen significant changes since its formation as a Union Territory. The creation of new districts is a part of ongoing efforts to streamline governance and ensure that development reaches all corners of the region. The process involves careful planning and resource allocation to ensure the effective functioning of the new administrative unit. The Lieutenant Governor’s commitment to the ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ vision indicates a broader strategy to empower local communities and foster development across the Union Territory.

The response from various stakeholders, including political parties and religious organizations, highlights the public’s engagement with the administrative and developmental agenda of Ladakh. The successful creation of Sankoo district demonstrates the efficacy of advocacy and constructive dialogue in achieving public demands. This development is expected to have a positive impact on the socio-economic landscape of the area, fostering further growth and prosperity.
