Sonamarg, a picturesque valley in Jammu and Kashmir, is poised to become a premier all-season hub for adventure sports, with the regional government outlining ambitious plans for winter and summer activities. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced on Thursday that the administration is developing projects for skiing and skating during the winter months, alongside white-water rafting in the summer season. This strategic initiative aims to leverage Sonamarg’s potential beyond its traditional appeal, transforming it into a year-round tourist and sporting destination.
Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that the government’s vision extends to developing eco-tourism sites in the Tragbal and Mohanmarg areas, located within the Ganderbal district. The process of obtaining necessary clearances from relevant authorities for these eco-tourism projects is underway. This development marks a significant shift in how Sonamarg is perceived and utilized, moving from a seasonally accessible location to a continuously operational center for both tourism and sports enthusiasts.
Abdullah highlighted the recent transformation of Sonamarg’s accessibility, noting that it has only been about a year since the area began to be recognized as a winter destination. Previously, Sonamarg would remain inaccessible during the harsh winter months. However, the construction of a tunnel has now ensured year-round access, paving the way for the implementation of new tourism initiatives and winter sports infrastructure. “We are now preparing projects for new destinations and winter sports,” Abdullah stated to reporters in Ganderbal, underscoring the proactive approach being taken to capitalize on the improved accessibility.
The Chief Minister was in Ganderbal, which is also his Legislative Assembly constituency, to inaugurate the 70th National School Games and to review ongoing development projects within the district. His presence at the event underscored the government’s commitment to promoting sports and regional development simultaneously. He expressed his personal commitment and desire to collaborate with Mian Mehr Ali, the MLA of Kangan, to firmly establish Sonamarg on the global tourism and adventure sports map. The focus will be on developing facilities for summer rafting and winter skiing and skating, with detailed project reports currently under preparation.
Addressing inquiries regarding the timeline for the eco-tourism projects in Tragbal and Mohanmarg, Abdullah acknowledged that such endeavors can sometimes experience delays due to the mandatory requirement of obtaining clearances from various environmental and wildlife authorities, including the Forest, Environment, and Wildlife departments. He assured that the government is diligently following due process to secure all requisite approvals, which will enable the development of these new tourist destinations. This methodical approach aims to ensure sustainable development while adhering to environmental regulations.
In a separate but related development, Abdullah provided an update on the land acquired for the Central University of Kashmir. He affirmed that the government would uphold the procedures that were in place at the time of acquisition and would strictly adhere to the terms and conditions agreed upon with the landowners. “Whatever written agreement was signed with them (landowners), and whatever terms were formally executed on paper, will be implemented,” he stated, emphasizing transparency and commitment to contractual obligations. This assurance is crucial for maintaining trust with local communities involved in land acquisition processes.
Reflecting on the developmental progress in Ganderbal over the past two years, Abdullah detailed the government’s efforts to expedite projects across various sectors. The overarching goal, he explained, has been to positively impact every facet of governance. He pointed to the inauguration or foundation stone laying of projects valued at approximately Rs 60 crore during his visit, including a significant Rs 40 crore bridge project over the Jhelum River, which is currently under construction. This highlights a substantial investment in the district’s infrastructure.
Further infrastructure enhancements in Ganderbal that were inaugurated on Thursday include several road projects, a new school building, and an auction shed at the Zazna fruit and vegetable market. These developments are expected to improve connectivity, educational facilities, and agricultural trade within the region. The Chief Minister reiterated that his primary objective for visiting Ganderbal was to attend the National School Games, hosted at the College of Physical Education. The event has brought together young athletes from across the nation to compete in Wushu and Taekwondo, sports in which local children have shown considerable interest. Abdullah expressed optimism for the success of the games, anticipating a positive impact on youth engagement in sports.
