Jammu Airport has commenced consultations with various stakeholders to assess its readiness and the feasibility of launching international flight operations. An official confirmed on Sunday that a planning and coordination meeting was convened on Saturday, presided over by Airport Director Devender Yadav. The meeting brought together representatives from airlines, security and regulatory agencies, government departments, tourism bodies, and other key stakeholders to deliberate on the strategic move.
During the discussions, potential international destinations, anticipated passenger demand, necessary operational requirements, and a roadmap for enhancing Jammu’s global air connectivity were thoroughly examined, according to a spokesperson for Jammu Airport. Airport Director Devender Yadav emphasized Jammu’s significant potential for international air connectivity, citing the region’s robust prospects driven by religious tourism, its strategic geographical location, the presence of educational institutions, burgeoning business activities, and substantial defense-related passenger movement. He informed the attendees that the existing terminal building is slated for utilization in international operations once domestic flights are transitioned to the newly constructed terminal, a plan envisioned within the airport’s master plan. Furthermore, Yadav apprised the stakeholders that Jammu Airport has been integrated into the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s Hub-and-Spoke Model, a development that is expected to streamline and expand air travel networks. Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that this inclusion is a significant step towards realizing the airport’s international aspirations.
Rahul Sahai, Chairman of the Indian Chamber of Commerce, Jammu Chamber, underscored the importance of a sustainable approach to international flight operations. He stressed that the chosen international sectors for Jammu must be commercially viable and consistently supported by flight services to ensure their long-term success. Sahai urged airlines to commit to the continuity of services, advising against the withdrawal of routes shortly after their introduction. He specifically suggested prioritizing connectivity to West Asia, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, and Europe, taking into account the potential demand generated by Umrah travel, pilgrimage tourism, scenic rail tourism, and international educational pursuits. Rajesh Gupta, Chairman of the Tourism Federation of Jammu, highlighted the initiative’s capacity to provide a substantial impetus to the tourism sector of Jammu and Kashmir, while also fostering trade and broader economic activities across the region. The deliberations encompassed a wide array of critical issues, including passenger demand projections, the level of airline interest, identification of potential international destinations, prospects for air cargo, and overall operational feasibility, as noted by the spokesperson. The meeting also addressed essential requirements related to immigration, customs, security, regulatory approvals, infrastructure development, and manpower augmentation. Coordination with the Indian Air Force (IAF) and other relevant agencies was also a key point of discussion. The overarching aim of this initiative, subject to the necessary approvals, stakeholder consensus, and operational readiness, is to bolster Jammu’s international connectivity and contribute to regional economic growth. Representatives from the Indian Chamber of Commerce, Jammu Chamber, and Tourism Federation of Jammu were present at the Saturday meeting, alongside officials from various airlines, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Customs, Health Services, ground handling agencies, the Department of Civil Aviation, J&K, the Tourism Department, and other pertinent agencies, underscoring the collaborative nature of this endeavor.
The strategic inclusion of Jammu Airport under the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s Hub-and-Spoke Model is anticipated to unlock new avenues for passenger and cargo movement, thereby integrating the region more effectively into the global aviation network. This model typically involves a central hub airport connected to various smaller ‘spoke’ airports, facilitating efficient travel and logistics. For Jammu, this could mean easier access to international destinations through connections at major Indian or international hubs. The focus on religious tourism, particularly for destinations like Saudi Arabia, aligns with the significant number of pilgrims undertaking Umrah. Similarly, the potential for connecting with the UK and Europe caters to a diverse set of travelers, including those pursuing education and leisure. The emphasis on commercially viable routes and consistent operations, as voiced by the Jammu Chamber of Commerce, is crucial for the long-term success of international flights from Jammu. Airlines are being encouraged to view Jammu not just as a point of origin or destination, but as a vital node in their broader network. The discussions around air cargo prospects also suggest a vision for Jammu to become a regional logistics hub, potentially benefiting local industries and facilitating trade. The examination of infrastructure and manpower requirements indicates a proactive approach to ensuring that the airport is fully equipped to handle the complexities of international operations, including enhanced security protocols and customs procedures. The involvement of the Indian Air Force is also a critical aspect, given that Jammu Airport operates with shared infrastructure, necessitating close coordination for flight scheduling and security. The commitment to strengthening international connectivity is seen as a direct driver for economic development, aiming to attract more foreign tourists, facilitate business travel, and create new employment opportunities within the region. This comprehensive approach, involving multiple government departments, private sector entities, and security agencies, signals a serious intent to elevate Jammu’s status as an international aviation gateway.
