The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has firmly stated that Article 370 will not be reinstated, dismissing calls for its restoration as an attempt to provoke the public and disrupt the prevailing peace in the Valley. The party emphasized that the constitutional decision to abrogate Article 370 on August 5, 2019, was a historic one, subsequently upheld by the Supreme Court, and is now a settled matter.
BJP spokesperson Altaf Thakur asserted that Parliament’s decision has permanently ended Article 370, and no political entity can reverse this constitutional reality. Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that Thakur characterized such statements as efforts to drag Kashmir back into past political turmoil and to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere that has emerged after years of violence. He highlighted the significant sacrifices made by security forces and civilians for the return of peace, stating that these cannot be undermined by politically motivated declarations.
Thakur underscored that Kashmir has endured considerable bloodshed, shutdowns, stone-pelting, and disruptions, and the populace should not be pushed into another cycle of instability. He indicated that the youth of Kashmir are now focused on education, employment, entrepreneurship, investment, tourism, and opportunities, rather than a return to an era dictated by shutdown calendars and violence. The BJP spokesperson maintained that while political parties have the freedom to express views within the constitutional framework, attempts to create agitation around an issue already constitutionally settled are futile.
He further clarified the party’s stance on statehood, reiterating that it would be restored at an appropriate time, a position consistent with government statements. Thakur drew a clear distinction between the restoration of statehood and the return of Article 370, stating unequivocally that there is no possibility of bringing back the latter. He urged those spreading confusion on the matter to cease misleading the public.
The BJP’s strong rebuttal comes in response to statements made by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who had reportedly urged political parties to unite for the restoration of Article 370. The party views such appeals as detrimental to the progress and stability achieved in the region. Thakur’s remarks suggest a deliberate effort by the BJP to counter narratives that seek to revive contentious political issues, emphasizing a forward-looking approach for Jammu and Kashmir.
The abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 led to the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. This move was presented by the central government as a measure to integrate the region more fully with India, promote development, and end separatism. The Supreme Court’s validation of the abrogation has further solidified the legal and constitutional position, according to the BJP.
