Thirteen women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs) affiliated with the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) have collectively generated an impressive income of ₹3.50 crore during the past financial year. This significant revenue was achieved through the successful supply of prasad (religious offerings) to pilgrims undertaking the sacred journey to the Vaishno Devi shrine. The initiative has not only bolstered the economic standing of the participating women but has also provided crucial livelihood opportunities for approximately 450 to 500 women in the region.
Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that the CEO of the Shrine Board, Sachin Kumar Vaishya, has lauded this endeavor as a cornerstone of the Board’s broader women’s empowerment agenda. Vaishya further indicated that there are concrete plans to extend the reach and impact of this successful model across other areas within the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. He stated, “During the last financial year, the initiative facilitated income-generation opportunities of approximately ₹3.50 crore, with plans to expand its outreach in the region.” This expansion is expected to create further economic avenues for women, leveraging the established success of the prasad supply chain.
The surge in pilgrim footfall has been a significant contributing factor to the increased economic activity. Vaishya highlighted that by June of the current year, the shrine had already welcomed over 50 lakh devotees, marking an increase of approximately 11 lakh more pilgrims compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. This rise in spiritual tourism is attributed to the unwavering faith of devotees and their confidence in the comprehensive arrangements made for the pilgrimage. The CEO expressed his appreciation for the dedicated efforts of the staff, security forces, and all other stakeholders who have been instrumental in ensuring the smooth and safe conduct of the annual yatra.
Beyond the economic empowerment initiatives, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has been actively pursuing several infrastructure development projects aimed at enhancing the pilgrim experience and promoting regional tourism. Among these, the recently inaugurated helipad at Village Hatt in Katra is poised to significantly improve accessibility for pilgrims intending to visit Shiv Khori, thereby providing a substantial boost to religious tourism in the area. The addition of the New Vaishnavi Bhawan has also augmented the amenities available to pilgrims, offering more comfortable and convenient lodging options.
Furthering its commitment to cultural preservation and promotion, the Board is also planning the development of an International Goddess Museum at Katra. This ambitious project is envisioned to serve as a platform for showcasing India’s rich Shakti tradition and the diverse manifestations of Goddess Durga, attracting both domestic and international visitors interested in Indian heritage and spirituality. The museum is expected to become a significant cultural landmark, drawing attention to the region’s deep-rooted religious and cultural significance.
In line with its focus on providing comprehensive facilities for pilgrims and local residents, the Board has also undertaken significant upgrades to healthcare services. The modern dental laboratory at Maa Durga Dental Clinic in Katra has been upgraded and commissioned at an estimated cost of around ₹43.54 lakh. This investment aims to ensure that pilgrims and the local populace receive high-quality dental care during their stay and residence in the area, enhancing the overall health and well-being infrastructure.
The Board’s commitment extends to public health initiatives as well. Under the ‘TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’ (Tuberculosis-Free India Campaign), the Board has actively participated by providing 270 nutritional food baskets to tuberculosis patients. This initiative underscores the Board’s dedication to supporting national health programs and contributing to the eradication of preventable diseases by ensuring adequate nutrition for those affected.
In the realm of religious infrastructure development, the Board has undertaken the construction of new temples at Sarotkot, Khanikot, and Pouni in the Reasi district. Additionally, renovation work has been carried out on the Shiv Parivar Temple and Thakurdwara Temple at Bhamyal. These projects, collectively estimated to cost approximately ₹1.19 crore, aim to preserve and enhance the religious heritage of the region, providing improved facilities for devotees and preserving ancient structures for future generations.
Demonstrating its commitment to community welfare and disaster relief, the Board provided relief material valued at ₹40 lakh to the administrations of Rajouri and Poonch districts. This aid was distributed among families affected by natural calamities, offering much-needed support during times of crisis and highlighting the Board’s role in disaster response and humanitarian assistance.
The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has also actively engaged in environmental conservation and the promotion of sports. Initiatives such as the ‘Jal Yodha’ Award recognize efforts in water conservation, while the achievements of sportspersons from its Sports Complex at national and international events are a testament to the Board’s investment in athletic development. The Board particularly lauded para-archer Payal Nag for her remarkable achievement of winning a gold medal at the World Archery Para Series 2026. The performance of the Women’s Basketball Team was also praised, reflecting the Board’s commitment to fostering sporting talent across various disciplines.
