The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced that over 23,000 civil services aspirants have taken advantage of three newly established examination centers. This initiative is part of the commission’s ongoing efforts to reduce congestion at existing venues and improve the overall examination experience for candidates.
With the addition of Bhubaneshwar, Kanpur, and Meerut, the total number of examination centers for the civil services preliminary examination has increased from 80 to 83. The UPSC stated that nearly 23,000 candidates have opted for these new centers, thereby alleviating pressure on adjacent locations for the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination-2026. The civil services examination, a rigorous three-stage process consisting of preliminary, mains, and interview rounds, serves as the gateway to prestigious positions in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and Indian Police Service (IPS).
This year’s civil services preliminary examination is scheduled to be held on Sunday. The Commission reported that it has received a total of 8,19,372 applications for the preliminary examination. The significant number of applicants underscores the continued popularity and importance of the civil services as a career path in India.
UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar emphasized that this initiative is designed to make the examination process more candidate-friendly, accessible, and efficient. In addition, the Commission has prioritized accommodating candidates with benchmark disabilities (PwBD) by allocating their preferred examination centers, even beyond established capacities, through creating additional seating where needed. (The Daily Excelsior reported that nearly 805 PwBD candidates secured their preferred center in the Delhi area alone.)
The newly established center in Bhubaneshwar has received 10,656 applications, contributing to a reduction in the burden on the Cuttack center. The Kanpur center has attracted 6,938 applications, easing the pressure on Lucknow. Meerut has received 5,902 applications, offering relief to candidates from western Uttar Pradesh who previously relied on Ghaziabad, UPSC stated.
To further enhance the examination infrastructure, the Commission introduced a dropdown option in the Civil Services Preliminary Examination-2026 application form, allowing candidates to indicate nearby cities of preference. The data gathered through this exercise will be instrumental in identifying suitable locations for future examination centers, the statement said.
