NCW’s ‘Shakti Samvaad’ Convenes in Srinagar to Bolster Women’s Rights

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has commenced the fourth iteration of its signature consultation program, “Shakti Samvaad,” in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on May 16-17, aiming to create a collaborative environment among state women commissions from across the nation. The event is designed to foster discussions and strategies to promote women’s rights, safety, empowerment, and enhanced institutional coordination.

The two-day consultation seeks to strengthen the bonds between the NCW and various state women commissions. Information reaching TahirRihat.com suggests that the program will promote synchronized efforts aimed at enhancing women’s welfare, streamlining grievance resolution processes, and boosting legal awareness. A key objective is to foster a more unified and effective approach to addressing the challenges women face across the country.

The inaugural session of the consultation includes addresses by Union Minister Jitendra Singh and NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar. Their participation underscores the significance of governmental support and leadership in advancing the cause of women’s rights and empowerment. The presence of these high-profile figures is expected to set a strong tone for the discussions and initiatives to follow. According to the commission, senior government officials, legal experts, law enforcement representatives, policymakers, and members of various state women commissions are actively participating in the event.

The consultation incorporates a series of thematic discussions centered on critical areas, including reviews of state laws from a women’s rights perspective. Updates on recent Supreme Court and high court judgments concerning women will also be examined, in addition to legal and institutional responses to stalking, and safeguards for women under the new labor codes. These discussions are intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the current legal landscape and identify areas where further improvements and protections are needed.

Central to the “Shakti Samvaad” initiative is the goal of strengthening policy coordination, improving grievance redressal mechanisms, promoting legal awareness, and ensuring the effective implementation of women-centric laws and welfare measures (NCW said). The NCW emphasized that this consultation in Srinagar reflects its dedication to collaborative policymaking and fortifying institutions dedicated to women’s welfare across various states. The commission added that the event underscores the increasing involvement of institutions and stakeholders in Jammu and Kashmir and highlights the importance of inclusive dialogue and coordinated governance in promoting women’s rights and ensuring access to justice.

The consultation is scheduled to conclude with a valedictory session, during which key recommendations will be outlined, alongside a roadmap for sustained cooperation between the NCW and state women commissions. This concluding session will serve as a platform to consolidate the insights and strategies developed during the event and to chart a course for future collaborative efforts.

In conjunction with the “Shakti Samvaad” consultation, Vijaya Rahatkar is scheduled to participate in several additional programs on May 19 during her visit to Jammu and Kashmir. These include a gender sensitization and POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Workplace Act) awareness program titled “Campus Calling” at Sher-e-Kashmir University, Kashmir, according to reports. Additionally, Rahatkar will participate in a ‘Jan Sunwai’ session for grievance redressal and hold meetings with senior administrative officials. The “Lal Ded National Award” ceremony is also on her agenda, further demonstrating a comprehensive commitment to addressing women’s issues and promoting their empowerment in the region.

The NCW hopes that this collaborative effort will lead to significant advancements in the protection and promotion of women’s rights throughout India. By bringing together key stakeholders and fostering open dialogue, the commission aims to create a more equitable and just society for women across the nation.
