Buddhist spiritual leader the Dalai Lama commenced his visit to Leh on Sunday, drawing thousands of local residents who lined the streets to offer him a warm reception. The revered figure arrived at Leh airport at approximately 10 am, where he was greeted by a gathering of monks, nuns, students, and a multitude of devotees. The atmosphere outside the airport was charged with reverence as large crowds assembled to present traditional khatags, or ceremonial scarves, and offer prayers.
Students from various educational institutions, members of the Tibetan community, and local Ladakhi residents formed a significant presence along the thoroughfares, waving scarves and expressing their deep respect for the Dalai Lama. Upon his arrival at his residence, the Dalai Lama was met by Chering Dorjay Lakrook, the president of the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA). The Ladakh Administration had been diligently preparing for the Dalai Lama’s arrival for several weeks, coordinating extensively to ensure a seamless and well-managed event.

To enhance security and manage access, sophisticated CCTV surveillance systems were installed at both the Dalai Lama’s residence and the Jivetsal venue. Furthermore, robust measures were put in place for vehicle passes and access control, ensuring that only authorized individuals could enter sensitive areas. These preparations reflect the high level of importance attached to the Dalai Lama’s visit by both the local administration and his followers.
Preparations are also in advanced stages for the grand celebration of the Dalai Lama’s 91st birthday, which is scheduled to take place on July 6. This significant occasion will be observed with considerable enthusiasm by his followers and will be supported by the Union Territory administration, highlighting the enduring respect and affection held for the spiritual leader across Ladakh.
