Lakhanpur, the primary entry point into Jammu and Kashmir, is slated for a significant transformation into an attractive gateway for visitors, featuring a unique monument and extensive beautification works. This development is part of a broader national initiative to establish ‘Street Food Hubs’ across the country. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh announced the project, which is estimated to cost over Rs 1.5 crore and will be funded through the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) and other available resources. The project estimate has already been finalized, paving the way for its commencement.

The decision to develop Lakhanpur as a street food hub was made by the Government of India, which selected the town among 50 locations nationwide for this purpose under the PM SVANidhi initiative. Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that this move underscores the Central Government’s focus on welfare-oriented development, prioritizing initiatives that benefit the public over purely political gains. Dr. Singh highlighted that numerous long-pending projects, which had been neglected prior to 2014, have been revitalized and are being implemented with renewed commitment under the current administration. This approach, he stated, reflects a departure from the vote-oriented politics of previous governments.

The PM SVANidhi scheme, according to Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, represents the first dedicated government initiative aimed at the welfare of street vendors. He emphasized that this segment of the population had historically been overlooked by successive governments. The proposed Street Food Hub at Lakhanpur will be developed across two distinct clusters. One cluster will be situated near the old bus stand, while the second will be located close to the Sales Tax Office. This strategic placement is intended to leverage Lakhanpur’s high volume of tourist, pilgrim, and transit traveler traffic, which is a constant feature due to its location on the Pathankot-Jammu highway. The hub, spread over an area of 1,754.25 square meters, is designed to offer modern vending infrastructure. A key objective of this development is to promote Dogra cuisine and other local culinary traditions, ensuring that visitors experience the authentic flavors of the region in a clean, organized, and welcoming environment. The project’s planning has placed local welfare at its core, with even the tendering process structured to maximize benefits for the local residents.
