Jammu police have apprehended a man accused of rape who had been at large for approximately seven years after escaping from police custody. The arrest followed an extensive manhunt conducted across the Jammu region. This development marks a significant success for law enforcement in bringing a fugitive to justice.
In a separate operation, a prominent drug trafficker was detained and subsequently lodged in jail under the stringent provisions of the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act in the Kishtwar district. The police stated that this action was taken to curb drug-related activities in the region.
The individual arrested in connection with the rape case has been identified as Tousef Ahmed, a resident of Reasi district. Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that Ahmed had initially escaped from police custody in 2019. His subsequent arrest in Jammu was the culmination of a prolonged investigation by the police. According to a police spokesman, Ahmed was wanted in a case involving the abduction and rape of a woman. The spokesman further detailed that since his escape, the accused had reportedly taken considerable measures to avoid capture, including allegedly concealing his identity and utilizing a forged identification card under the assumed name of Mohd Sahil. A dedicated police team successfully traced his whereabouts through meticulous investigation, leading to his eventual apprehension.
In another significant law enforcement action, the Udhampur district police arrested an absconder named Des Raj. He was wanted in a decade-old case registered under various sections of the law, including charges related to intent to provoke a breach of the peace, in the Rehmbal area of the district. The police confirmed that Des Raj had been declared an absconder, and warrants for his arrest had been issued by the district mobile magistrate of Udhampur on April 11, 2016. His capture brings closure to a long-standing legal case.
The detention of the notorious drug peddler in Kishtwar district under the PIT-NDPS Act underscores the authorities’ commitment to combating the drug menace. The spokesman identified the detained individual as Haris Hussain, who is considered a key supplier of narcotics within Kishtwar town. Hussain’s repeated involvement in drug-peddling activities came to light during ongoing investigations, which necessitated his preventive detention under the stringent provisions of the PIT-NDPS Act. He has been lodged in the Bhaderwah district jail. The PIT-NDPS Act allows for the detention of individuals involved in illicit drug trafficking to prevent further criminal activity and to disrupt drug supply chains.
Furthermore, in a related development, an alleged drug peddler named Neetan Kapoor was arrested on Monday from Dharamkot village in Billawar, Kathua district. During his apprehension, police recovered approximately 9 grams of heroin from his possession. This arrest is part of a broader crackdown on drug trafficking networks operating in the Jammu region.
Additionally, a bovine smuggler, identified as Murad Ali, also known by the alias ‘Fajji’, a resident of Marallian, was arrested from the Miran Sahab area of Jammu. Ali had reportedly been evading arrest for several months. According to police reports, he and his associates allegedly attacked a police team in April, resulting in injuries to two personnel. Following this incident, Ali had been on the run until his recent capture. The arrest of bovine smugglers is part of efforts to curb illegal cross-border activities and maintain law and order in border areas.
