Sakeena Itoo, the Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Social Welfare, Education, Health, and Medical Education, officially opened four newly constructed buildings belonging to the Social Welfare Department in Nanil, located in the Anantnag district of south Kashmir. These facilities are designated for an old age home and for PLASH (Providing Livelihood Assistance and Support to the Homeless) and PAREESH (Providing Assistance and Rehabilitation for the Elderly and Socially Handicapped) services. The inauguration took place on Saturday.
Director of Social Welfare, Mohammad Akbar Khan, provided the Minister with a comprehensive overview of the infrastructure development at the site. Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that the construction of the four buildings incurred an estimated cost of Rs 11.27 crore. Furthermore, an additional Rs 1.10 crore has been allocated for the development of associated infrastructure, which includes roads, parks, and other essential amenities designed to complement the primary facilities.
During her address to the assembled attendees, Minister Itoo reiterated the government’s steadfast commitment to the well-being and empowerment of all citizens, with a particular emphasis on those individuals and groups facing social and economic disadvantages. She underscored the critical importance of reinforcing grassroots-level infrastructure and enhancing the delivery of welfare services. This strategic strengthening, she explained, is essential to ensure that government-led initiatives effectively reach their intended beneficiaries and achieve their desired impact.
The Minister highlighted the various developmental projects that have been undertaken within the Anantnag district. She stated that the newly inaugurated facilities are poised to significantly contribute to the provision of care, shelter, and crucial support systems for the most vulnerable segments of society. The PLASH centre, as detailed by the Minister, is specifically designed to offer comprehensive care and support to orphaned children who have lost their parents and are without adequate means of livelihood. Concurrently, the old age home is intended to serve destitute elderly individuals who lack family support, providing them with a secure and caring environment.
Minister Itoo further elaborated on the pivotal role played by the Social Welfare Department in extending vital support and protection to individuals experiencing social insecurity, disabilities, and other forms of vulnerability. She emphasized that these institutions should transcend mere provision of shelter, aiming instead to foster a safe, dignified, and supportive atmosphere for all residents. The Minister also directly addressed the children residing at the PLASH facility, assuring them that their outstanding demands would be prioritized for resolution. These specific requests include the establishment of a gymnasium, the development of a recreational park, improvements to road connectivity leading to the facility, and the provision of an ambulance service.
The inauguration signifies a substantial investment in the social infrastructure of Anantnag, aiming to address critical needs within the community. The facilities are expected to provide a much-needed boost to the welfare services available to the elderly, orphaned children, and other vulnerable populations in the region. The government’s continued focus on strengthening social welfare programs underscores its dedication to creating a more inclusive and supportive society. The development of these new buildings represents a tangible step towards realizing that objective, offering practical solutions and enhanced living conditions for those who need them most. The allocation of funds for allied infrastructure further demonstrates a holistic approach to development, ensuring that the facilities are well-integrated into the local community and easily accessible.
The Minister’s remarks highlighted the strategic importance of these social welfare initiatives in fostering a sense of security and belonging among the beneficiaries. By providing dedicated spaces and specialized services, the government aims to empower individuals and families, enabling them to lead more fulfilling and dignified lives. The emphasis on grassroots-level implementation suggests a commitment to ensuring that the benefits of development are distributed equitably and reach those who are often marginalized. The ongoing efforts in Anantnag are part of a broader strategy to enhance social welfare across Jammu and Kashmir, addressing the diverse needs of its population through targeted interventions and infrastructure development. The successful completion and inauguration of these facilities are a testament to the collaborative efforts between the government and the local administration in prioritizing the welfare of its citizens. The focus on specific vulnerable groups, such as orphaned children and the elderly without family support, indicates a nuanced understanding of the social challenges faced by the community and a proactive approach to mitigating them. The assurance of addressing pending demands from the children at the PLASH facility further underscores a responsive governance model, where the needs and concerns of the beneficiaries are actively considered and acted upon. This approach is crucial for building trust and ensuring the long-term success of social welfare programs.
