Jammu Civic Body Initiates ₹66 Lakh Project to Restore Neglected Pond

The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has launched a significant initiative to revitalize traditional water bodies and bolster water conservation efforts within the region. On Sunday, the corporation commenced a project valued at ₹66.52 lakh aimed at restoring a neglected pond located in Sainik Colony. This undertaking is being carried out under the umbrella of the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ (SHS) campaign, a national mission focused on cleanliness and environmental stewardship.

The foundation stone for this ambitious restoration project was formally laid by Dr. Narinder Singh, the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Jammu South. The ceremony was attended by several key figures, including the Joint Commissioner (Works) of the JMC, other senior officials from the municipal corporation, former Deputy Mayor, former councillors, and a number of local residents who have a vested interest in the area’s development. The presence of these stakeholders underscored the community’s engagement with the initiative.

Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that the pond in question has fallen into a state of disrepair, characterized by the accumulation of weeds, silt, sludge, and considerable solid waste. This neglect has severely compromised its capacity to hold water and has had a detrimental effect on the surrounding ecological environment. The comprehensive restoration plan encompasses a multi-faceted approach to address these issues.

The scope of the project includes meticulous cleaning and desilting operations to remove accumulated debris and sediment. Furthermore, the pond’s profile will be re-engineered to optimize its water-holding capabilities. Dewatering and sophisticated water management techniques will be employed to ensure efficient handling of water resources during and after the restoration. To ensure the long-term structural integrity of the pond, its embankments will be strengthened through the construction of Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) walls and robust stone pitching.

A crucial component of the restoration involves the construction of an RCC filtration chamber, designed to improve the quality of the water. The project also includes the installation of GI chain-link fencing to secure the perimeter of the pond, enhancing safety and preventing unauthorized access. Surface finishing works will be undertaken to create an aesthetically pleasing and functional public space, complemented by the installation of solar lighting to illuminate the area after dark, promoting its use and safety.

During the event, MLA Dr. Narinder Singh emphasized the critical importance of preserving traditional water bodies, highlighting their role as invaluable environmental and community assets. He articulated that ponds play an indispensable part in rainwater harvesting, a vital process for replenishing groundwater reserves. Moreover, he noted their contribution to maintaining ecological balance, which is essential for sustainable urban development. Dr. Singh lauded the JMC’s proactive initiative, stating that the revitalized pond would offer the residents of Sainik Colony a cleaner and more secure environment, thereby strengthening the local water conservation infrastructure.

He further elaborated that development works in the area are being executed with a strategic focus on key aspects such as cleanliness, water conservation, road infrastructure, and the enhancement of green spaces. The restored pond, according to Dr. Singh, is envisioned to transform a previously neglected site into a sustainable public amenity. He expressed optimism that this project would serve as a replicable model for rejuvenating similar water bodies across the city, promoting a wider adoption of such conservation practices.

This specific project is an integral part of the Jammu Municipal Corporation’s overarching vision, encapsulated by the slogan ‘Clean Ponds, Healthy Cities.’ This broader strategy aims to systematically restore urban water bodies, enhance their water retention capacity, improve groundwater recharge mechanisms, and foster the development of environmentally sustainable neighborhoods. The initiative reflects a commitment to integrating ecological preservation with urban planning and community well-being.

Local residents present at the project launch expressed their enthusiastic support for the JMC’s endeavor. They conveyed their assurance to the authorities, pledging their full cooperation in maintaining the cleanliness and upkeep of the pond once the restoration work is completed. This commitment from the community is seen as a vital factor in the long-term success and sustainability of the project, ensuring that the revitalized water body continues to serve its intended purpose for generations to come.
