Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir – A significant boost to sports infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir was marked with the inauguration of a Rs 30.35 crore sports facility at the Sher-i-Kashmir Multi Sports Activity Centre (SKMSAC) in Gindun Rajbagh. The newly commissioned complex dramatically expands the region’s capacity for swimming and gymnastics, aiming to provide young athletes with enhanced training opportunities year-round.
The comprehensive development includes a state-of-the-art Olympic-sized swimming pool, an all-weather heated training pool, and a modern indoor gymnastics hall. Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that this initiative is a key step in fostering a more robust sporting ecosystem within the Union Territory, addressing long-standing infrastructure deficits.
The centerpiece of the new complex is a 50-meter by 25-meter Olympic-sized swimming pool, featuring 10 competition lanes. This facility is equipped with diving platforms at one, three, and five-meter heights, alongside advanced filtration, circulation, and disinfection systems. It also boasts changing rooms, washrooms, storage lockers, and spectator seating for 300 individuals, making it suitable for hosting competitive swimming, diving, and other aquatic sports events. The construction cost for this Olympic pool alone was Rs 19.96 crore.
Complementing the Olympic pool is a Rs 5.35-crore all-weather training and toddler pool complex. This facility is designed for continuous use throughout the year and includes an indoor lap pool and a child-friendly toddler pool. Notably, it features solar-powered heating, anti-skid decking, and sophisticated filtration and disinfection systems, along with necessary changing and shower amenities. This complex is expected to be particularly beneficial for athletes, students, and the general community during the colder winter months, ensuring uninterrupted training.
The inauguration also saw the unveiling of a Rs 5.04-crore indoor gymnastics hall. This facility measures 36 meters by 21 meters with a height of 10 meters and is outfitted with modern gymnastics apparatus. The hall is anticipated to significantly strengthen coaching and training capabilities in gymnastics, a sport that has witnessed a growing interest among the youth in Kashmir. Previously, the lack of dedicated infrastructure had limited the potential for aspiring gymnasts in the Valley.
During the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah highlighted the importance of these new facilities in providing a fresh sporting environment for students. He emphasized that this marks the first time Kashmir possesses an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and with its solar-powered heating system, children will be able to train for all twelve months of the year. Abdullah stated that through such facilities, the administration aims to offer young athletes a wider array of sports to pursue and train in.
Abdullah further commented on the gymnastics facility, noting that discussions about gymnastics in Jammu and Kashmir have often centered on Jammu, overlooking the equal interest shown by children in Kashmir. He acknowledged that the absence of adequate infrastructure had previously hindered their ability to pursue the sport effectively. The Chief Minister expressed his commitment to continue adding more sporting disciplines and facilities to provide children with greater choices and opportunities to explore new sports.
Witnessing live demonstrations by swimmers and gymnasts at the newly opened facilities, Abdullah observed the immediate impact of the infrastructure. The new sports complex is projected to stimulate grassroots participation in sports, enhance access to professional coaching, and establish more defined pathways for athletes to compete at national and international levels. The all-weather aquatic facilities are particularly crucial for maintaining consistent training regimens, especially during the winter season, which often disrupts outdoor sporting activities.
The development of this extensive sports infrastructure is expected to cultivate a new generation of athletes from Jammu and Kashmir, equipped with world-class training facilities. The investment signifies a commitment to sports development and aims to bring the region’s sporting talent to the forefront. The enhanced capacity for aquatic sports and gymnastics is anticipated to lead to improved performance and greater representation in national and international competitions.
