Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha is set to officially commence the annual Amarnath Yatra on Thursday, July 2, by flagging off the inaugural contingent of pilgrims from the Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas base camp in Jammu. This marks the beginning of the 57-day pilgrimage to the revered holy cave shrine, situated at an altitude of 3,880 meters. The first batch of devotees will depart for Kashmir in a convoy of buses and private vehicles, expected to leave around 4 am under a comprehensive, multi-layered security arrangement, a measure necessitated by prevailing terror threats in the region. Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that offline registration for the yatra began on Wednesday, with hundreds of devotees braving overnight rain to complete the process across various registration centers in Jammu. The atmosphere at these centers was charged with devotional chants of ‘Har Har Mahadev’ and ‘Bam Bam Bhole’ as pilgrims queued for on-the-spot registration, while token distribution for those arriving from different parts of the country continued for a second consecutive day.
Registration and token distribution counters have been strategically established at key locations, including the Tawi riverfront near the Jammu Artificial Lake, Geeta Bhawan, Ram Mandir, and Bhagwati Nagar, ensuring accessibility for a large number of pilgrims. Senior civil and police officials, including Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar, Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Minhas, and SSP Joginder Singh, conducted on-site inspections to assess the preparedness and crowd management strategies. The officers engaged with pilgrims, emphasizing the need for a seamless registration process, orderly token distribution, and the provision of adequate public amenities. The pilgrimage itself will formally commence on July 3 from the twin base camps located at Pahalgam in the Anantnag district and Baltal in the Ganderbal district. Devotees have the option of undertaking the journey via two primary routes: the traditional Pahalgam route, which spans approximately 48 kilometers, and the shorter Baltal route, covering about 14 kilometers. Jammu has been experiencing a consistent influx of pilgrims, including a significant number of sadhus from across India, in anticipation of the yatra’s start. Reports indicate that approximately four lakh pilgrims have already completed their registration for this year’s pilgrimage.
In parallel, efforts are underway to ensure robust communication infrastructure along the pilgrimage routes. Ganderbal Deputy Commissioner Jatin Kishore held a review meeting concerning telecommunication arrangements, directing major service providers like BSNL, Airtel, and Jio to deploy dedicated technical teams along the Baltal route for the entire duration of the pilgrimage. Kishore also instructed these telecom operators to furnish the contact details of their nodal officers to the district administration to facilitate prompt coordination in addressing any communication-related challenges. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Jammu, has expressed confidence in the comprehensive security and administrative arrangements put in place by the government and security agencies for the pilgrims’ safety. However, Chamber president Arun Gupta appealed to the government to avoid any undue harassment of the local business community during the yatra period, highlighting the crucial role traders and entrepreneurs play in facilitating the pilgrimage and their right to conduct business activities without significant disruption, provided they adhere to legal compliances.
