Third Vande Bharat Train Approved for Jammu-Srinagar Route with Udhampur Stop

The Union Ministry of Railways has given its approval for the introduction of a third Vande Bharat Express train service connecting Jammu and Srinagar. This new service will include Udhampur as a designated stopover, a move aimed at enhancing travel convenience for both local residents and tourists visiting the region. The decision comes in response to persistent demands from the local populace for expanded rail connectivity and improved passenger amenities.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh announced the approval on social media platform X, expressing gratitude to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for the prompt and positive response. Singh highlighted this development as a testament to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to addressing the aspirations of the people in Jammu and Kashmir. Currently, two Vande Bharat trains are operational between Jammu and Srinagar. These services, which were initially extended to Jammu from the Katra-Srinagar route on April 30 of this year, will now see a significant addition with the new third train. The upcoming Vande Bharat train, comprising two sets, will be assigned train numbers 26407 and 26408, further bolstering the rail transport infrastructure in the Union Territory.

Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that this expansion is part of a broader strategy to modernize and enhance the railway network in the strategically important region. The Jammu Division of Northern Railways has also received official sanction from the Railway Ministry to increase the maximum permissible speed of trains to 100 kilometers per hour on the newly constructed 111-kilometer-long broad-gauge rail section that spans from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra to Banihal. This marks a substantial upgrade from the previous speed limits, which were set at 85 kmph on the Katra-Sangaldan stretch and 75 kmph on the Sangaldan-Banihal segment. The decision to augment train speeds was finalized after the Railways conducted thorough assessments and ensured strict compliance with all prescribed safety conditions, according to an official statement.

The increase in operational speed is anticipated to significantly reduce travel times between key destinations in Jammu and Kashmir, thereby strengthening overall connectivity. Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Jammu, emphasized that the faster train services will translate into quicker, safer, and more comfortable travel experiences for passengers. This enhancement is also expected to provide a substantial boost to tourism, trade, and various economic activities across the region. The Railways have reiterated their continuous commitment to prioritizing the safety and convenience of passengers, with this infrastructural upgrade being a key step in that direction. The successful operation of Vande Bharat trains on the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge, at speeds nearing 100 kmph on Thursday, further underscores the advancements being made in the region’s rail infrastructure.

The introduction of the third Vande Bharat train, coupled with the increased speed limits on critical sections of the route, signifies a major leap forward in the railway’s commitment to improving connectivity and mobility within Jammu and Kashmir. This development is expected to have a ripple effect on the local economy, making it easier for goods and people to move between the two major cities and their surrounding areas. The enhanced speed will not only benefit daily commuters but also facilitate greater tourism, allowing visitors to experience more of what the region has to offer within shorter travel durations. The strategic importance of this rail link, connecting the plains of Jammu with the Kashmir Valley, cannot be overstated, especially during periods of adverse weather conditions that can often disrupt road transport. The Vande Bharat trains, known for their modern amenities and semi-high-speed capabilities, are poised to become the preferred mode of transport for many, further integrating the region with the rest of the country.

The approval for the third Vande Bharat train comes at a time when the Indian Railways is aggressively expanding its network and upgrading existing lines to accommodate faster and more efficient train services. The focus on the Jammu-Srinagar corridor reflects the government’s commitment to developing robust infrastructure in the Union Territory. The inclusion of Udhampur as a stopover is a strategic decision, considering its importance as a gateway to the popular Vaishno Devi shrine and other tourist destinations. This will undoubtedly increase accessibility for pilgrims and tourists alike, potentially leading to a surge in visitor numbers and associated economic benefits for the local communities. The increased speed on the Katra-Banihal section, which includes crossing the iconic Chenab Rail Bridge, is a remarkable engineering feat and a testament to the advancements in railway technology being deployed in challenging terrains.

The operationalization of the new train service and the speed enhancements are expected to create new employment opportunities, both directly within the railway sector and indirectly through the growth of tourism and commerce. The Railways’ continuous efforts to ensure safety compliance before implementing speed upgrades highlight a responsible approach to infrastructure development. As the region continues to develop, improved transportation links are crucial for sustained economic growth and social integration. The Vande Bharat initiative, with its focus on speed, comfort, and modern amenities, aligns perfectly with these developmental goals, promising a more connected and prosperous future for Jammu and Kashmir.
