Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express Exceeds 1 Lakh Passengers in Record Time

The JammuSrinagar Vande Bharat Express has transported over one lakh passengers within just 22 days of commencing its commercial operations, marking a significant achievement for rail connectivity in the region, officials announced. This milestone underscores the growing importance of the rail route as an accessible and comfortable mode of transport, particularly when compared to the higher costs associated with air travel between the two cities.

Passengers are currently paying Rs 730 for the journey, excluding catering charges. Information reaching TahirRihat.com suggests that this rail service is becoming a preferred option, especially given that airfares between Jammu and Srinagar can range from Rs 9,000 to Rs 15,000. The semi-high-speed train service has facilitated travel for 1,01,050 passengers between May 2 and May 23, establishing itself as a reliable transport option connecting Jammu and the Kashmir Valley.

The train, inaugurated by the Union railway minister on April 30, began its regular services on May 2. Railway authorities stated that since its launch, the Vande Bharat Express has experienced high demand, providing commuters with a swift, comfortable, and dependable all-weather travel alternative on the Jammu-Srinagar route. The train completes the journey between Jammu and Srinagar in slightly over four-and-a-half hours, presenting a quicker and more convenient option compared to traveling by road.

Railway authorities reported that the Vande Bharat Express service has played a crucial role in mitigating long-standing travel challenges often encountered on the national highway, which is frequently subject to disruptions caused by landslides and adverse weather conditions. Since its introduction, the Vande Bharat Express has maintained a consistent record of punctual operations and reliable service.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu, Uchit Singhal, has expressed that this achievement is a source of pride for the Northern Railway. (Singhal said, “Carrying over 1,01,050 passengers in just 22 days reflects the trust reposed by people in this service. It is a testament to our commitment to providing world-class infrastructure and modern rail connectivity to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.”)

Singhal further added that passengers have responded favorably to the train’s comfort, stringent safety standards, and onboard hospitality. He emphasized the railway’s ongoing commitment to maintaining the highest standards of punctuality, cleanliness, and safety, and expressed gratitude to the passengers for making the service a success in such a short timeframe.

Singhal noted that this all-weather rail link fulfills a long-held aspiration of connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country through a dependable transportation network. In addition to improving passenger mobility, the service is anticipated to stimulate tourism and expedite the transportation of horticultural products and handicrafts from the Valley to markets throughout India.

The modern amenities offered by the train, including GPS-based passenger information systems and upgraded interiors, have enhanced its attractiveness. In a move to further improve the travel experience, the IRCTC has introduced a special vegetarian Kashmiri menu on the route. Passengers can choose to opt out of meals when booking their tickets, with catering charges deducted from the fare. Alternatively, food can be purchased onboard, subject to availability.

Railway officials have described the achievement as a landmark moment in the region’s transportation history, emphasizing the increasing acceptance of modern rail infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. The introduction of the Vande Bharat Express is seen as a pivotal step towards enhancing connectivity and promoting economic growth in the region.
