The critical meeting, attended by approximately 30 to 35 key stakeholders including fruit growers, farmers, traders, and various aggregators, underscored the growing reliance on rail infrastructure for the region’s vital horticultural produce.
Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that the discussions specifically zeroed in on optimizing the utilization of goods sheds located in Anantnag and Pampore, alongside the established parcel train service operating from Budgam to Adarsh Nagar in Delhi. This focus highlights a strategic effort to streamline logistics and ensure efficient movement of apples, a cornerstone of Kashmir’s economy.
The pivotal role of the Railways in facilitating apple transportation was particularly emphasized, recalling its crucial intervention during the 2025 season. When natural calamities disrupted the National Highway, the Jammu Division of Indian Railways stepped in, successfully transporting an estimated 20,000 tonnes of apples from Kashmir to various mandis across the country via goods and parcel trains. This intervention, as reported by an official spokesman, was instrumental in mitigating substantial financial losses for growers and traders, demonstrating the indispensable nature of rail connectivity during unforeseen circumstances.
Looking ahead to the next apple season, the meeting aimed to solidify arrangements for continued rail transport.
