Two Held After Stones Pelted at Srinagar-Bound Bus in Haryana, Injuring Two

Two individuals have been apprehended by authorities in Haryana’s Karnal district following an alleged stone-pelting incident targeting a bus en route to Jammu and Kashmir. The assault, which occurred late Saturday night, resulted in injuries to one passenger and an employee of a roadside eatery, according to police reports released on Sunday. The incident has prompted a swift response from the Jammu and Kashmir government, with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah confirming that his office has engaged with the Haryana administration regarding the matter.

Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that the Haryana administration has assured prompt and stringent legal action against those responsible. Chief Minister Abdullah conveyed this assurance via his official X handle, stating that the Jammu and Kashmir government is closely monitoring the situation and stands in solidarity with the affected passengers. The confrontation took place around 11:30 pm on Saturday within the parking area of the Divine Star Dhaba in Karnal. Sources indicate that two young men from Yunispur village in the Kurukshetra district arrived at the scene in a car.

The bus, which was travelling from Delhi to Srinagar, had also stopped at the dhaba’s parking lot. According to Inspector General of Police (Karnal Range) Ashwin Shenvi, a verbal dispute erupted when the youths, while maneuvering their vehicle, allegedly struck the bus. This altercation reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation, with some bus passengers and dhaba employees also becoming involved. During the ensuing melee, the two youths are accused of throwing stones at the bus, causing damage to its windows and interior seating.

As a consequence of the stone-throwing, a passenger and a dhaba employee sustained injuries. The bus eventually departed for its destination at approximately 1:30 am, after the incident was addressed by law enforcement. The Karnal police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) and are currently questioning the two detained men. Further investigations are ongoing to ascertain the full details and circumstances surrounding the incident. IGP Shenvi has appealed to the public to maintain calm and uphold peace and harmony while the police conduct their thorough investigation into the matter.

The incident underscores the potential for localized disputes to escalate, particularly in transit hubs where travelers and service providers interact. The involvement of a bus carrying passengers to Jammu and Kashmir adds a layer of sensitivity, given the region’s ongoing security considerations. The swift apprehension of suspects and the assurance of legal action from both the local and J&K administrations aim to de-escalate tensions and reassure the public. The police’s call for calm is a standard procedure in such cases, emphasizing the importance of allowing the investigative process to unfold without external pressure or interference. The nature of the dispute, initially described as a vehicular altercation, highlights the fragility of public order and the need for responsible conduct from all parties involved in public spaces.

The involvement of multiple individuals, including passengers and dhaba staff, in the physical altercation suggests a chaotic and rapidly developing situation. The use of stones as a weapon indicates a significant escalation from a verbal disagreement to a potentially dangerous physical confrontation. The injuries sustained, though not detailed as severe, necessitate a thorough investigation to ensure accountability. The timely intervention of the police and the subsequent arrests are crucial steps in restoring order and demonstrating the state’s commitment to public safety. The focus now shifts to the investigative process, which will aim to establish the sequence of events, the extent of culpability of the arrested individuals, and any potential contributing factors that may have fueled the initial dispute.

The response from the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister’s office signifies the importance attached to the safety and well-being of its residents, regardless of where they may be traveling. Such cross-state coordination in addressing incidents involving citizens is vital for maintaining inter-state harmony and ensuring that all individuals are afforded protection under the law. The assurance of stringent action by the Haryana government is expected to serve as a deterrent against similar acts of violence and vandalism in the future. The incident also brings to the fore the challenges faced by transport operators and roadside establishments in managing public interactions and ensuring the safety of their patrons and staff. The police’s appeal for calm is a reminder of the collective responsibility to foster an environment of peace and mutual respect, especially in a diverse and interconnected society.

The investigation will likely delve into the specifics of the initial vehicular contact, the subsequent verbal and physical altercations, and the precise actions leading to the stone-pelting. The role of each individual involved, including those who joined the confrontation, will be examined. The damage to the bus, while secondary to the injuries, will also be a factor in assessing the overall impact of the incident. The authorities will aim to ensure that justice is served and that the incident does not lead to further repercussions or communal tensions. The successful resolution of this case through due legal process is paramount for upholding the rule of law and reinforcing public confidence in the security apparatus.
