LG Sinha Pushes Vaishno Devi University for Central Research Grants

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has urged Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) to actively pursue research funding opportunities, particularly from the newly announced Central Government research fund. Sinha, who also serves as the Chancellor of the university, directed the Vice-Chancellor to establish a dedicated team comprising faculty members and selected students. This team is tasked with identifying and applying for grants from the substantial Rs 1 lakh crore research fund unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15. The initiative aims to bolster national innovation efforts and encourage maximum participation from academic institutions across the country.

Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that the Lieutenant Governor emphasized that a university’s true success is reflected in the achievements of its students and alumni, who contribute significantly to societal and national progress. He encouraged SMVDU to strategically leverage government schemes, including the aforementioned Rs 1 lakh crore research fund and the Prime Minister Research Chairs scheme, to enhance its research capabilities and output. The formation of a focused team is intended to streamline the application process and maximize the university’s chances of securing these vital research grants.

During the 37th meeting of the Executive Council of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University held at Kakryal in Katra, several key decisions were made to advance the university’s infrastructure and academic offerings. The Council granted in-principle approval for the construction of a new 200-bed boys’ hostel, with funding to be provided by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB). A detailed project report is to be prepared for this significant infrastructure development. Furthermore, the university received in-principle approval for two new academic programs: a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree, BA LLB (Hons), and a Bachelor of Technology in Food Technology, BTech in Food Technology. The Council also proposed exploring the feasibility of offering an LL.B. program in conjunction with science and commerce streams, indicating a move towards interdisciplinary legal education.

The Executive Council adopted the budget proposals for the Financial Year 2026-27 and the final audit report for the Financial Year 2024-25. A proposal to enhance financial assistance for students participating in national and international conferences, workshops, and events was also approved. This measure aims to support students in gaining broader exposure and presenting their research on global platforms. The meeting provided a comprehensive review of the university’s academic, administrative, and financial progress, with several initiatives approved for upcoming academic sessions. The ratification of nominations for external members to the Executive Council and the Academic Council of SMVDU was also completed, alongside a review of ongoing and completed major construction projects, with a call for their timely completion to ensure uninterrupted university operations.

Lieutenant Governor Sinha also directed the university administration to prioritize student welfare by conducting counseling, mental health awareness, and value-based programs. He further recommended subscribing to online counseling platforms to provide robust support systems for students. Appreciating the university’s existing initiatives in wellness, sports, and youth engagement, the LG stressed the importance of holistic development for students. Recognizing the contributions of students involved in the National Service Scheme (NSS) and National Cadet Corps (NCC), Sinha suggested academic relaxations and additional credits for those representing the university at events of national importance. This move is intended to acknowledge and reward their commitment and achievements beyond academic coursework.

In a bid to further enhance industry relevance and skill development, the Lieutenant Governor proposed the introduction of industry-linked vocational courses. These courses are envisioned to be delivered by both internal faculty and external experts, and importantly, will be open to all students, irrespective of their minimum eligibility criteria. This forward-thinking approach aims to equip students with practical skills and knowledge directly applicable to the job market, fostering a more employable graduate cohort. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Pragati Kumar, provided a detailed briefing to the Executive Council, outlining key developments concerning admissions, faculty recruitment, career advancement, ongoing construction projects, and the proposed new academic programs for the forthcoming academic year, signaling a proactive management approach towards the university’s growth and development.
