Ravi Canal Project: Jasrotia Presses for Swift Approval of ₹571.83 Crore Plan

Rajiv Jasrotia, a BJP Member of the Legislative Assembly from Jasrota constituency, recently engaged with Union Minister of State, Dr. Jitendra Singh, to advocate for the prompt endorsement of key developmental projects within his constituency and the encompassing regions of the Kathua district. The focal point of the meeting was the expeditious sanctioning and execution of critical public projects in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly those concerning irrigation infrastructure, education, and overall public welfare.

During the discussion, Jasrotia presented a comprehensive overview to Dr. Singh, underscoring the urgent need for the approval and subsequent implementation of projects of paramount importance to the local populace. Information reaching TahirRihat.com suggests that a central issue brought to the forefront was the proposed initiative for “Improvement and Strengthening of Main Ravi Canal and its distribution network,” a project estimated to cost ₹571.83 crore.

Jasrotia emphasized to the Union Minister the strategic and agricultural significance of the Ravi Canal project for Jammu and Kashmir, especially considering the operational readiness of the Shahpur-Kandi Dam and the imperative for maximizing the utilization of the Ravi river’s water resources. He articulated that the project encompasses the extensive reinforcement and modernization of the Main Ravi Canal, coupled with the restoration and enhancement of the entire canal distribution network. The proposed project also incorporates the construction of a canal siphon across the River Ujh, designed to ensure continuous canal operations during periods of flooding and to mitigate water conveyance losses.

The MLA further stated that upon its completion, the project is anticipated to unlock an irrigation potential of approximately 54,072 hectares. This expansion is expected to significantly benefit farmers and bolster the irrigation sector across extensive areas of the region. Jasrotia emphasized the long-term advantages of the project, indicating that the scheme would not only enhance irrigation facilities and agricultural productivity but also make substantial contributions to farmers’ welfare, water resource management, and overall rural economic advancement.

Seeking the Union Minister’s intervention, Jasrotia requested that the matter be promptly addressed with the Central Water Commission (CWC) and other relevant authorities for reconsideration and accelerated approval. This expedited process would facilitate the swift execution of the project, serving the broader public interest. Jasrotia also informed Dr. Jitendra Singh that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project has already been submitted by the Jal Shakti (RTIC) Department of Jammu and Kashmir to the Central Water Commission for thorough reconsideration on its merits.

In addition to irrigation infrastructure, the BJP MLA strongly advocated for the long-standing demand for the establishment of both a Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) and a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) within the Jasrota constituency. These educational institutions are considered vital for enhancing educational opportunities and fostering academic excellence among the region’s youth.

The proposed Ravi Canal improvement project aims to address critical issues related to water management and agricultural productivity in the region. By modernizing the existing canal infrastructure and expanding the irrigation network, the project seeks to reduce water losses, improve water distribution efficiency, and increase agricultural yields. The construction of a canal siphon across the River Ujh is a key component of the project, designed to mitigate disruptions caused by flooding and ensure a reliable water supply for irrigation purposes. This infrastructure upgrade is expected to have a positive impact on the livelihoods of farmers and the overall economic prosperity of the region.

The establishment of a Kendriya Vidyalaya and a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Jasrota constituency would significantly enhance access to quality education for students in the area. Kendriya Vidyalayas are centrally funded schools known for their high academic standards and comprehensive curriculum. Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are residential schools that provide free education to talented students from rural areas. These institutions would offer students opportunities to excel academically and develop their full potential, contributing to the overall educational development of the region.

The successful implementation of these projects would represent a significant step forward in addressing the developmental needs of the Jasrota constituency and the broader Kathua district. By prioritizing irrigation infrastructure and education, the government aims to improve the quality of life for residents, promote economic growth, and create a more sustainable future for the region. The timely approval and execution of these projects are crucial for realizing their intended benefits and ensuring that the region can continue to thrive in the years to come.
