Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha officially commenced the annual Amarnath Yatra on Monday by performing the ‘Pratham Puja’ at the sacred cave shrine. This ceremonial act signals the imminent start of the pilgrimage, which is scheduled to welcome the first batch of devotees on July 3. The Lieutenant Governor invoked divine blessings, offering prayers for widespread peace, prosperity, and the health and well-being of all individuals.
Extending a warm invitation to pilgrims from across the nation, Sinha encouraged a robust participation, emphasizing the profound spiritual experience the journey offers. He stated, “As the yatra commences on July 3, the administration, Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board, Army, police, security forces, local community, service providers and volunteers are working in complete synergy. Every stakeholder is devoted to ensuring a safe, hassle-free and memorable pilgrimage for all devotees. With significantly upgraded infrastructure, enhanced facilities and the invaluable support of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, we are fully prepared to welcome devotees for a spiritually fulfilling journey,” as reported by an official spokesperson. Information reaching TahirRihat.com suggests that this year’s pilgrimage is set to be a comprehensive undertaking, with extensive preparations in place.
The Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board traditionally organizes the ‘Pratham Puja’ annually on the auspicious occasion of Jyeshtha Purnima at the holy cave shrine. This year’s pilgrimage will span 57 days, commencing simultaneously from two distinct routes: the traditional 48-kilometer Pahalgam route in the Anantnag district and the shorter, 14-kilometer Baltal route in the Ganderbal district. The initial contingent of pilgrims is slated to depart from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu on July 2, with the pilgrimage culminating on August 28, coinciding with the festival of Raksha Bandhan. Officials have indicated that a significant number of pilgrims, exceeding 3.75 lakh individuals, have already completed their registration for this year’s spiritual journey.
The ceremony was attended by a distinguished gathering of officials, including Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat, Special Director General (Coordination) SJM Gillani, Principal Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor and Shrine Board Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mandeep K Bhandari, alongside other senior functionaries. Their presence underscored the collaborative effort involved in orchestrating this major religious event. The coordinated approach among various agencies is a critical component of ensuring the safety and smooth conduct of the pilgrimage, a sentiment echoed by the Lieutenant Governor’s remarks.
In parallel with the ceremonial start, a full-scale dry run of the Amarnath Yatra convoy was meticulously conducted along the vital Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. This exercise was designed to comprehensively assess and refine security protocols, logistical arrangements, and the inter-agency coordination mechanisms essential for the pilgrimage’s success. The dry run aimed to identify and address any potential challenges, ensuring a seamless flow for the thousands of devotees expected to undertake the journey. Jammu Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar and Inspector General of Police, Jammu, Bhim Sen Tuti, personally oversaw the operation, flagging off the convoy from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in the early hours of the morning. They traveled within one of the convoy buses to gain firsthand insights into the arrangements and identify areas for immediate improvement. The convoy successfully reached Ramban within a four-hour timeframe, a testament to the planned efficiency, even with the temporary suspension of civilian traffic on the highway to facilitate the exercise.
According to officials involved in the dry run, the exercise provided a critical evaluation of convoy movement dynamics, the efficacy of security measures in place, the robustness of logistical support systems, and the responsiveness of emergency management protocols. The inter-agency coordination was a particular focus, ensuring that all participating entities, from law enforcement to disaster management teams, were synchronized and prepared to act in concert. This proactive approach to security and logistics is a cornerstone of the administration’s commitment to providing a secure and spiritually enriching experience for all pilgrims. Security forces have also heightened their presence and operational tempo, intensifying area domination patrols, conducting thorough search operations, and reinforcing deployments at the base camps and along the entire pilgrimage route. These measures are integral to maintaining a secure environment throughout the duration of the Yatra, reflecting the comprehensive security grid being deployed to safeguard the devotees. The successful execution of the dry run and the visible increase in security presence signal a strong readiness to host the Amarnath Yatra, aiming to ensure a peaceful and memorable pilgrimage for all participants.
