Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah presented cash awards totaling Rs 2.71 crore to 580 accomplished sportspersons and international athletes from the Union Territory during a significant ceremony held at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar. The awards recognized achievements during the 2023-24 and 2024-25 periods. Chief Minister Abdullah personally presented awards to 22 individuals, while the remaining beneficiaries received their financial incentives through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) directly into their bank accounts, ensuring efficient and transparent disbursement.
Addressing the assembled athletes and dignitaries, Chief Minister Abdullah extended his congratulations to the awardees, emphasizing that these cash awards represent the initial phase of the government’s commitment to bolstering support and fostering sporting talent across Jammu and Kashmir. He further elaborated on the government’s intention to progressively increase these awards, stating, “We should also increase this gradually, so that our athletes do not have to worry about investing in coaching, training, equipment, travel, etc. We should not put too much pressure on your families and parents.” This sentiment underscores a policy shift towards providing a more sustainable financial framework for athletes, reducing reliance on personal or familial resources for essential developmental needs. The Chief Minister highlighted the inherent geographical advantage of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly its altitude, which he believes can be strategically leveraged to establish world-class training centers for athletes. This natural asset, he contended, should be capitalized upon to create specialized facilities that can enhance the performance and development of athletes across various disciplines.
“We have to capitalise on this. We have to use this by establishing high-quality training centres. And we have to pay attention to different sports,” Abdullah stated, signaling a comprehensive approach to sports development. He called for increased focus on both established and emerging sports, citing recent successes of athletes from Jammu and Kashmir in disciplines such as cricket and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) as evidence of the region’s diverse sporting potential. This balanced approach, he suggested, is crucial for ensuring that talent is recognized and nurtured across the spectrum of sporting activities, from traditional sports to newer, more dynamic fields.
Furthermore, Chief Minister Abdullah drew a strong connection between the promotion of sports and the broader societal effort to steer young people away from drug abuse. He asserted that sustained investment in sports infrastructure and increased engagement with the youth are indispensable components of an effective anti-drug campaign. “Staying away from drugs is not just a slogan for one day a year. Twelve months of that year, seven days a week, and that will only happen when we can give infrastructure to sports and get the attention of the kids,” he remarked, underscoring the proactive role sports can play in positive youth development and community well-being. During the event, a notable moment was the felicitation of J&K MMA fighter Owais Yaqoob for his significant victory at BRAVE CF 107 in Bulgaria. Yaqoob’s triumph over an undefeated, two-time IMMAF World Champion was lauded as a significant achievement for the region’s sporting profile. In a symbolic gesture aimed at raising awareness, the Chief Minister also launched an anti-drug and anti-doping campaign by handing over a campaign torch to a prominent sports icon from Jammu and Kashmir. This torch is slated to travel through schools and various areas within Srinagar, serving as a mobile platform for disseminating crucial information and fostering dialogue around these critical issues. The initiative aims to embed messages of healthy living and responsible choices within the community, leveraging the influence of sports figures to reach a wider audience and promote a drug-free environment.
