Authorities in the Jammu region have apprehended seven individuals in connection with drug trafficking, with one notorious peddler detained under the stringent Prevention of Illicut Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act. The significant bust occurred across multiple districts, including Kathua, Reasi, Samba, and Rajouri, signaling a concerted effort by law enforcement to curb the flow of narcotics in the area. The police stated that the detentions and seizures were the culmination of ongoing operations aimed at dismantling drug networks operating within the region.
Mohd Yasir, identified as a resident of Jagatpur village in Kathua district, was the individual subjected to detention under the PIT-NDPS Act. This act allows for the preventive detention of individuals involved in drug trafficking to prevent them from engaging in further illicit activities. Yasir has been lodged in the central Jail at Kot Bhalwal in Jammu, a move that underscores the seriousness with which his alleged involvement in drug peddling is being treated. Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that Yasir has a documented history of criminal conduct, with three prior cases related to drug peddling registered against him at various police stations within Kathua district during the previous year. The police spokesman indicated that to curtail his ongoing illegal operations, a comprehensive dossier was compiled and subsequently forwarded to the Jammu divisional commissioner for the necessary approval to detain him under the PIT-NDPS Act. Following the issuance of a detention warrant, the police successfully executed it on Saturday, leading to Yasir’s apprehension and subsequent incarceration.
The broader crackdown also yielded the arrest of six other individuals across Reasi, Samba, and Rajouri districts. In Reasi district, four persons identified as Vasu Malhotra, Rohit Singh, Sushil Sharma, and Vishal Singh were taken into custody on Saturday. Their arrests followed the recovery of approximately 2.7 grams of heroin from their possession. The operation took place near the Yog Ashram in Katra, a popular pilgrimage town. The police have stated that these individuals were actively involved in the distribution of narcotic substances within the district. The seizure of heroin indicates a direct link to the illicit drug trade, and investigations are ongoing to ascertain the source and intended recipients of the recovered contraband.
Further reinforcing the anti-drug operations, another drug peddler, Akshay Kumar, was arrested on Sunday. His apprehension occurred in the Vijaypur area of Samba district after 40 grams of heroin were recovered from him during a routine frisking operation. The quantity of heroin seized suggests a significant amount intended for distribution. The police spokesman confirmed that Kumar was actively engaged in drug trafficking activities in the Samba region. In a separate incident in Samba, police also arrested Vinod Kumar, a resident of Akhnoor, on Saturday. The arrest was made following the recovery of 30.42 grams of heroin from his car during a checking point in the Ramgarh area. The vehicle was reportedly being used to transport the illegal substances, highlighting the methods employed by drug traffickers to evade law enforcement.
The district of Rajouri also saw a significant seizure and arrest. Anwar Hussain was apprehended by the Rajouri police after they seized two kilograms of ganja from his possession. The recovery was made during a checking operation conducted in the Nowshera area. The substantial quantity of ganja seized points towards a larger operation potentially involving wholesale distribution. The police have stated that all arrested individuals have been booked under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, a comprehensive legislation designed to combat drug trafficking and abuse in India. The ongoing investigations are expected to shed further light on the interconnectedness of these arrests and the broader drug trafficking networks operating in the Jammu region.
