Jammu and Kashmir BJP leader Sunil Sharma has strongly criticized the National Conference-led government for scheduling a mere seven-day Assembly session, asserting that the move is a deliberate attempt to sidestep meaningful public debate, accountability, and a thorough review of the administration’s performance. Sharma, who serves as the Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, voiced these concerns during a press conference held in Jammu, highlighting the significant public expectations placed upon elected representatives who have been in office for nearly two years.
Sharma emphasized the crucial role of the Assembly as the constitutional platform for articulating the concerns, grievances, and aspirations of the populace to the government. He accused the National Conference administration of undermining this democratic institution by limiting the Assembly proceedings to an exceptionally short duration. The upcoming Autumn Session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly is slated to commence in Srinagar on September 21.
According to Sharma’s analysis, the announced seven sittings are effectively reduced to approximately five working days for substantive discussions, given that the opening day is typically dedicated to procedural formalities and another day is reserved for any incidental business. Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that this compressed schedule raises serious questions about the government’s willingness to engage in comprehensive dialogue on the multifaceted issues facing the entire Union Territory. Sharma questioned the feasibility of addressing and resolving the concerns of an entire Union Territory within such a limited timeframe, characterizing it as a manifestation of unserious governance and an effort to evade critical questioning.
The BJP, as the principal opposition party, intends to vigorously champion public issues during the session. Sharma stated that the party is committed to addressing the people’s concerns and expects a similar level of seriousness from the government. He asserted that the National Conference administration cannot evade its responsibilities in the Assembly, particularly when faced with uncomfortable inquiries regarding its perceived failures. The Leader of Opposition further revealed that BJP legislators have been actively engaged in extensive public outreach programs across Jammu and Kashmir, visiting district headquarters and various localities to gather firsthand accounts of public grievances.
Sharma conveyed that citizens are expressing considerable frustration and are looking to their elected representatives to voice their issues in the Assembly, maintaining faith in the democratic process to hold the government accountable. He detailed that the BJP has meticulously compiled a comprehensive list of public concerns through extensive meetings involving its legislators, and the party is fully prepared to present these issues with force and conviction. The BJP leader also alleged a decline in routine governance, a lack of proactive government outreach to the public, and a noticeable increase in corruption complaints. He stressed that ordinary citizens should not feel apprehensive when interacting with government offices due to pervasive corruption or bureaucratic red tape, and that the government must provide clear answers to the public on these critical matters.
In light of these concerns, the Leader of Opposition has formally demanded an extension of the Assembly session to a minimum of one month. This extension, he argued, would provide adequate time for in-depth discussions on pressing public issues and ensure a more robust system of government accountability. The BJP’s stance underscores a broader political debate in Jammu and Kashmir regarding the efficacy and transparency of legislative oversight, particularly in the context of a government perceived by the opposition as reluctant to face scrutiny. The party’s preparedness to raise these issues stems from direct engagement with the electorate, reflecting a commitment to representing their voices in the highest legislative forum of the Union Territory.
