Srinagar is set to host the third edition of the Kashmir Marathon on October 25, with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah extending a warm invitation to athletes from across India to participate in the event. Abdullah, speaking at the inauguration of the Kashmir Marathon Expo at Polo Grounds in Srinagar, expressed his hopes for enthusiastic participation, emphasizing the joy of competing over the sole pursuit of victory.
Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that Abdullah encouraged all aspiring runners, whether seasoned athletes or enthusiastic amateurs, to join the marathon, stating, “Winning is not as important as participating. Take part, and enjoy this marathon.” He further informed attendees that on-the-spot registrations are still open, providing a last-minute opportunity for those who have not yet signed up.
The chief minister highlighted the anticipated presence of athletes from various regions of India and abroad, underscoring the event’s growing national and international appeal. He proudly asserted that the scenic beauty and surrounding landscapes of Kashmir offer an unparalleled backdrop for a marathon, unmatched by similar races held elsewhere in the country. Adding to the event’s allure, Abdullah noted that the prize money for the Kashmir Marathon is significantly higher compared to other races of its kind held across the nation.
In a move aimed at fostering long-distance running within Jammu and Kashmir, a new category has been introduced this year specifically for local runners. This initiative, reportedly a response to demands from local athletes, includes a dedicated prize for participants from the region. Abdullah explained that this measure is intended to provide encouragement for sports, particularly running disciplines such as half marathons and full marathons, within the local community.
While Abdullah confirmed his presence to officially flag off the marathon, he will not be participating as a runner this year, a departure from his involvement in the first two editions. His commitment to initiating the race underscores the importance placed on the event by the regional administration. The expo, which opened its doors to the public, serves as a hub for registration, information dissemination, and engagement with the upcoming marathon, further building anticipation for the October 25th event.
The Kashmir Marathon has steadily grown in stature since its inception, attracting a diverse field of participants and showcasing the region’s potential as a destination for sporting events. The emphasis on participation and the unique natural setting are key factors contributing to its increasing popularity. The introduction of a local category is expected to further boost engagement and talent development within Jammu and Kashmir’s athletic community, aligning with broader goals of promoting sports and healthy lifestyles across the Union Territory. The event is poised to be a significant occasion for both athletic competition and the promotion of tourism in the picturesque valley.
