A passenger bus veered off a road and plunged into a deep gorge in a remote area of Udhampur district in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of at least two individuals and injuries to fifteen others. The accident occurred around 8 am as the bus was en route from Pechound to Ramnagar, specifically at a location known as Gulli Gala. Officials reported that the vehicle was reduced to a mangled wreck following the catastrophic fall.
Local villagers initiated an immediate rescue operation following the incident, transporting seventeen injured passengers to the nearby Public Health Centre (PHC) in Basantgarh. After receiving initial medical attention, these injured individuals were subsequently transferred to Ramnagar hospital. It was at this facility that a woman and a six-year-old girl were pronounced dead due to their severe injuries. Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that the condition of six more passengers remains critical, necessitating their referral to the Udhampur district hospital for specialized medical care.
Senior BJP leader and Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Sunil Bhardwaj visited the hospital to assess the condition of those injured. He expressed significant concern regarding the state of the road where the accident took place, emphasizing the urgent need for its upgradation to enhance commuter safety. Bhardwaj also highlighted the importance of strengthening healthcare infrastructure within the constituency to ensure prompt medical assistance and improved treatment outcomes, particularly during emergencies.
Following the news of the accident, Union Minister Jitendra Singh contacted the Deputy Commissioner of Udhampur, Ananth Dwivedi, to ascertain the situation. Singh assured that all necessary assistance was being provided and confirmed that his office was maintaining constant communication with the district administration to monitor developments and coordinate relief efforts. The exact cause of the accident is currently under investigation, though the condition of the road has been cited as a potential contributing factor by local representatives.
The remote location of the accident presented challenges for the initial rescue efforts, underscoring the critical need for improved road infrastructure and accessible emergency services in such areas. The swift response by local volunteers, however, played a crucial role in the immediate aftermath, facilitating the timely transfer of the injured to medical facilities. The incident has reignited discussions about road safety measures and the adequacy of healthcare provisions in the region, particularly in rural and less accessible parts of Udhampur.
The authorities are expected to conduct a thorough inquiry into the circumstances leading to the bus falling into the gorge. This investigation will likely examine factors such as vehicle maintenance, driver conduct, and the overall condition of the road. The loss of life, especially that of a young child, has cast a somber mood over the region, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and proactive measures to prevent future tragedies. The ongoing efforts to provide care for the injured and support to the affected families are a priority for the district administration, with assurances of comprehensive assistance from the central government through Union Minister Jitendra Singh.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent challenges related to road safety in hilly and remote terrains across Jammu and Kashmir. The need for regular road maintenance, implementation of advanced safety features, and enhanced public transport safety standards remains paramount. The remarks by MLA Sunil Bhardwaj regarding road upgradation and healthcare strengthening point towards a recognized deficit that requires immediate attention from relevant authorities. The commitment to provide specialized treatment for the critically injured underscores the ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of this unfortunate event and ensure the best possible medical outcomes for all affected individuals.
The response from the Union Minister’s office and the district administration highlights a coordinated approach to disaster management and relief. The continuous communication and provision of assistance are vital in such critical situations. The focus now shifts to not only addressing the immediate needs of the victims and their families but also to implementing long-term solutions that can prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future. The investigation into the cause of the accident will be crucial in identifying specific areas for improvement and ensuring accountability.
