A significant initiative to modernize one of Jammu‘s oldest and most bustling commercial hubs, the Sabzi Mandi at Parade, has been formally launched with the laying of the foundation stone for a comprehensive redevelopment project. The ambitious plan, estimated to cost Rs 5.88 crore, aims to transform the traditional vegetable market into a contemporary, well-equipped, and user-friendly trading environment, promising enhanced facilities for both vendors and the public. The groundbreaking ceremony was led by local MLA Yudhvir Sethi, who was joined by Jammu Municipal Corporation Commissioner and Jammu Smart City CEO Devansh Yadav, underscoring the project’s importance to the city’s urban development agenda.
Speaking at the event, Yudhvir Sethi articulated the vision behind the redevelopment, stating that it would herald a new era for the Parade Sabzi Mandi. The project is designed to introduce modern infrastructure and significantly improve the amenities available to the thousands of traders and visitors who frequent the market daily. The redevelopment blueprint includes the construction of a spacious Mild Steel (MS) covered shed, a critical feature designed to offer weather protection for vendors and their produce. This new structure is slated to accommodate 117 distinct vendor platforms, each meticulously planned to measure 1.8 meters by 2.1 meters. This arrangement is intended to facilitate systematic and orderly market operations, preventing congestion and ensuring that each vendor has adequate space. The provision of such dedicated vending areas is a key component in streamlining the market’s functionality and improving the working conditions for the traders.
Officials involved in the project highlighted that a crucial aspect of the redevelopment involves the enhancement of sanitation and cleanliness within the mandi. To this end, the existing drainage network will undergo substantial strengthening and rehabilitation. This measure is crucial for minimizing water logging, a persistent issue in many traditional markets, and ensuring the efficient disposal of wastewater. Improved drainage is fundamental to maintaining hygienic conditions, which are paramount for a food market, and will contribute to a healthier environment for all stakeholders. The project’s commitment to upgrading civic amenities extends to ensuring that the market operates with modern standards of public health and safety.
Further enhancing the market’s aesthetic appeal and identity, the redevelopment plan incorporates a redesigned main entry gate. This new entrance will feature sandstone cladding, a design choice intended to imbue the market with a distinct visual character that respects its historical context while signaling its modernization. In addition to structural upgrades, the project will introduce modern public amenities aimed at improving the convenience of traders and visitors. Separate toilet blocks for men and women are to be installed, addressing a basic but often overlooked need in such public spaces. Furthermore, drinking water cooler units will be provided, ensuring access to clean water for everyone within the market complex.
The circulation areas within the Parade Sabzi Mandi are also set to undergo a significant transformation. Movement and pedestrian pathways will be developed using Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC). This durable material is chosen for its ability to withstand heavy pedestrian traffic and light vehicular movement, which are characteristic of a busy market. The use of PQC is expected to ensure long-term durability for the market’s internal infrastructure, significantly reducing maintenance requirements over time and providing a stable and safe surface for daily operations.
