Kishtwar Development Focus: Roads, Mobile Connectivity Top Union Minister’s Agenda

Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh has identified the enhancement of road connectivity and expansion of mobile network services in remote areas as paramount development priorities for the Kishtwar district. This focus emerged during a virtual meeting held on Sunday with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders from the district, who provided feedback on grassroots requirements and local development issues.

Dr Singh, who represents the Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency, engaged in an online discussion with BJP office-bearers and mandal representatives to review the developmental landscape of Kishtwar and solicit input on pressing needs. The representatives brought forth a spectrum of concerns encompassing road infrastructure, mobile network coverage, healthcare accessibility, educational facilities, tourism promotion, and other developmental requirements in the district’s far-flung regions. The dialogue emphasized the necessity for systematic follow-up and coordinated efforts to address the issues raised from the ground level. Information reaching Tahir Rihat suggests that the central government is keen on accelerating development in such remote areas.

Road connectivity was a central theme of the deliberations, with participants voicing concerns regarding the progress of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) projects, the extension of connectivity to isolated habitations, delays in road construction works, and challenges related to obtaining forest clearances. In response, Dr Singh instructed district and mandal leaders to compile a consolidated list of priority road projects in collaboration with elected representatives. This consolidated list is intended to facilitate effective pursuit of these issues with the relevant government authorities. The minister stressed that improved road infrastructure is crucial for economic development and access to essential services.

Mobile connectivity emerged as another significant point of discussion. Representatives highlighted numerous areas within Kishtwar that require the installation of additional mobile towers to bolster network coverage. The Union Minister urged the district BJP leadership to prepare a comprehensive list of these locations for submission to the concerned telecom agencies. Dr Singh referenced the positive impact of a recently installed mobile tower in Marwah, which has improved connectivity for residents and students. He advocated for similar initiatives to be undertaken in other underserved areas, particularly to benefit students and inhabitants of remote regions who often face communication challenges. Enhanced mobile connectivity is seen as vital for education, emergency services, and economic opportunities.

The meeting also addressed the state of healthcare services in inaccessible parts of the district. Representatives called for the strengthening of medical facilities and an increase in the availability of specialist doctors at sub-district hospitals and health centers. Dr Singh proposed a strategy of deploying doctors from better-equipped hospitals to remote areas on a rotational basis. He assured that this matter would be taken up with the relevant authorities to explore its feasibility. Furthermore, the minister discussed the possibility of organizing medical camps in areas where regular access to healthcare remains limited, aiming to provide essential medical services to underserved populations. The initiative aims to bridge the gap in healthcare access for remote communities.

Discussions also extended to educational infrastructure, including proposals for the establishment of Kendriya Vidyalayas (Central Schools), the strengthening of existing degree colleges, the creation of additional teaching posts, the expansion of academic streams, and the improvement of hostel facilities. Dr Singh advised local representatives to compile these educational requirements and present them to the district administration and the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) as appropriate. He emphasized the importance of coordination with the administration for issues such as land identification and feasibility assessments for new educational institutions. The minister underscored that improved educational opportunities are fundamental for the long-term development of the region.

The development of tourism and pilgrimage infrastructure was also a key aspect of the discussions. Representatives pointed out the need for enhanced facilities at Sarathal and other tourist destinations within the district. Dr Singh suggested the preparation of a detailed list of locations and infrastructure requirements. This list would then be aligned with relevant tourism schemes and funding opportunities. He expressed optimism that the convergence of available resources could lead to the creation of improved amenities for tourists and pilgrims, thereby supporting local economic development. The minister highlighted the potential of Kishtwar’s natural beauty and cultural heritage to attract more visitors.

The Union Minister’s proactive engagement underscores a commitment to addressing the developmental deficits in remote areas of Kishtwar. The emphasis on tangible improvements in road and mobile connectivity, coupled with a focus on healthcare, education, and tourism, signals a comprehensive approach to fostering inclusive growth in the region. The directive to compile consolidated lists of priority projects indicates a structured approach to implementation and follow-up, aiming to ensure that the needs of the local population are met effectively.
